sandman He wasn't one of the top players for Chelsea though whereas he is for Liverpool. The top clubs pay their top players far more than Liverpool do hence why they attract better players.

Presumably that means if Liverpool paid him £120k a week they'd be just as good as the current big 4?

Nope it means they can't attract players worth 120k+. Sturridge is doing an admirable job this season but he's not a top top player like the big four of the last few seasons can sign and pay top dollar to.

How much is their french tank on? I reckon most of the tops fours fans wouldnt mind having him in their squad.. City in particular. Suarez is a top 4 player easily! Liverpool just had the unfortunate problem of having to get rid of all the crap Kenny brought in. The signings they made this summer show huge progress and that they can still attract good players.

cept for Aspas..

They were spotted this weekend. Saurez outstanding yet again. 4 - 0 and up to second in the league. Not bad, not bad at all.

Had an easy run of fixtures though tbf. You've played Man United but they are and were, particularly at that time, in transition. Lost at home to a decent Saints side The only other "big four" team you've played is Arsenal, which you lost.

Merseyside Derby next week and Spurs, Man City and Chelsea to play away in December. Going to be a lot tougher for Liverpool in the coming months.

^ All true, but Liverpool have generally done well against the opposition put up against them so far. Or certainly better than most people would have predicted.

There is obviously some truth in what you say Sandman but you can only beat what is put in front of you and 23 points from our first 11 games is pretty impressive. Particularly for a team described on these boards in recent weeks as "also rans" "a non entity" and "very unlikely to finish in the top 5". My favourite though is from the resident United fan who in the prediction thread had United as champions and Liverpool nowhere in the top 6 hahaha  . Now I am a realist and had us down as 5th in that thread but now I am starting to believe that top 4 is a realistic target. Enjoying the ride at the moment in any case.

Is there such a thing as a "big four" this season.
Liverpool have already played the current 1st,3rd and 5th.
So far, so good.

And yet they are in 2nd place.

That's the point, anyone around them they have lost to (apart from UTD). They have had an easier run of fixtures and played more mid table/bottom table sides.

Whereas City have lost to Villa, Cardiff and Sunderland; United have lost to West Brom; Chelsea have lost to Newcastle; and Spurs have lost to Newcastle and West Ham.

Two-thirds of the league is 'easy' games. I'm really struggling to see what point is being made by 'they have had an easier run of fixtures and played more mid table/bottom table sides' when the teams you would expect to contend for the title have lost to those sides.

All that matters is where you are at the end of the season.

Alan Shearer scored plenty of goals for Newcastle. He didn't win the league with them. :|
