To me that's pretty clearly showing Gunter got out of the way.

To avoid handling it, giving away a penalty and maybe even a sending off. Did the right thing.

He's got a player (Austin) who spins away and he follows - so is facing away....he turns back just as the ball is kicked.....arm is in the way, pulls it away behind his back.

Not as if he ducked or hid his face etc

I think there's an element of that to it (think I said the same yesterday), and the potential for deflecting it into the other corner, but when you watch it back on the video as opposed to a few stills it's a lot clearer that he's moving out of the way.

Personally I think it was the wrong decision. If he'd kept his arm to his side and stepped into it instead of swerving like a batsman avoiding a bouncer he'd have taken it mainly on his chest/stomach.

Turning sideways to protect being hurt is an understandable fight or flight reaction but they are highly paid not to bottle a bit of temporary soreness.

But truth be told the soddin goalpost was evidently poorly sited.Ground maintenance crew out.

I doubt Gunter deliberately moved out of the path of the ball. But either way, to be fair to him, he's younger than me and I would have ducked well out the way if a ball came flying at my face.

Exactly - thats what i said. If he was part of the wall i can understand people moaning if he "ducked/turned away" but he was spun away by Austin, turns back just as Barton hits it, he pulls his right arm away which turns his body.

He's not part of the wall no, but that doesn't mean he isn't allowed to block a shot!

The ball comes straight at him and he pulls out of the way of it. I don't think he should've or needed too and if he didn't the ball wouldn't have beaten McCarthy into the bottom corner.

No, but being part of the wall you expect it to hit you.......he was marking a man, turns round and there's a ball - he either risks blocking it with his arm, thus giving a pen away or letting it go without deflection and McCarthy saving it (who should have IMHO)

melonhead because it was going to hit his arm......

your arm moves independently of the rest of your body.

As I've said, I think McCarthy should've saved it and would've done so if his starting position wasn't slightly out, but Gunter should still have been able to react and take that hit without any real problem.

His instinct made him move out of the way. A better defender with better instincts would've stepped into the path of the ball and not handballed it or deflected it in. When you watch it at normal speed from a variety of angles they all, IMO, show he had enough time to react (hence why he managed to get out of the way) but it's his choice in reacting that allowed the shot to expose McCarthy.

I can't help but think Barton is both a total oxf*rd, and a comedy genious at the same time.

I think that sums him up quite well...
