Adkins hits out

by paddy20 » 15 Nov 2013 09:49

Adkins has hit out publicly again about one of his players. This seems a bit reminiscent of his blast at Kebe following the Perterboro game. I just wonder how helpful this is for the morale of the players. I think if there is a problem with Adkins its that there seems to be a gulf in communications between him and the players that are on the fringe or coming back from injury.Admittedly perhaps Akpan should not have said he is looking to go out on loan but surely an admonishment behind closed doors would have been better?

From the Post;

'He said: “It’s quite easy to say ‘I’m going to go out on loan’, but if there’s nobody actually prepared to take you, then it might underline why these players aren’t in the team.

“Sometimes they have to look at themselves and say, I wonder why I’m not in the side?

“There are obviously going to be factors for that.”

Sometimes it feels like our manager is just playing champ man.

"Tell Akpan that he will get his chance in the first team when the time is right"

Akpan made his claims publicly, so I don't see why Adkins shouldn't be allowed to do the same. Sometimes players need a public a dressing down, but the majority will stay private within the club.

Not saying he didn't deserve it. Just a comment on his style as a whole.

i think Adkins should have just called him into his office and told him off.
i thought Nige was PR savvy but this seems a bit naive.
at the end of the day, Akpan is a poor player like Blackman who get a big move from a lower league and think they are good enough to be getting a run in the side.

And that is why he needed a public dressing down. Don't forget that Akpan made his feelings known publicly and Adkins is just addressing them and laid down a challenge to him.

You all moan when the club don't let us know what is going on, and then when something is giving to the press you moan that is should be kept in house. As usual they can't win.

tbf to him, he's looked decent every time ive seen him play for us.
and im not sure if hes saying "i deserve a place in this team" hes just saying he wants to play, and if he isnt going to play, he'd like to go somewhere else, so he can play

In my view the best management strategies are behind closed doors. Airing publicly that you think there is a problem with a player virtually means the end of any relationship. I don't think Akpan deserved that. Put him in his place by all means but not belittle him.It seems Adkins can alienate players, whether this is a planned strategy to get rid or simply an over zealous way of imprinting his authority. Who knows. I guess its stick or carrot. We have been used to the carrot I think and to certainly no dirty washing in public

But the point is that Akpan had already aired his dirty laundry to the public and Adkins was just responding to it. So in your view it is OK for the player to criticise his manager in public but a manager can't do the same. if there is any relationship breakdown between them then it happened when Akpan spoke out.

Now if Akpan had gone to Adkins in private and discussed this and then Adkins still spoke publicly about then you have a point, but he didn't. He spoke to the press first and he even said this in the article.

It's not OK for a player to criticise the manager in public, so it's also not right for the manager to get embroiled in tit for tat "he said she said" nonsense.

Akpan's a kid. Nige is paid to be a grown up. IMO he should have given Akpan the hairdryer in private and told the press it had been dealt with privately. End of story.

Shame. I still cherish the Chelsea game which Akpan and Alfie turned around. Great night out.

Might explain some of his tactics then.

"It doesn't matter which side a full back plays because a full back is a full back"

Totally out of keeping of the Reading way of doing things, sack him now. I bet Nigel Howe is seething - and rightfully so.

Some of the greatest managers out there have criticised players publicly when the situation is deserving of it, so why should Adkins be any different? It hasn't stopped their teams being successful.

I have no sympathy for Akpan, he brought it on himself. And in reality all Adkins has done is tell him to work hard and force himself into his plans.

Can't really understand what the fuss is about. Player opens mouth to spit dummy out, gets told to put dummy back in by manager. Seems to be more for the benefit of those that wish to bash Adkins, than any reflection on the situation with Akpan.
