Royalcop I'm not sure that a test for recreational drugs is included in many football medicals (though possibly it should). Otherwise you wouldn't end up with situations such as this and Mutu at Chelsea.

Make it essential.

Except many recreational drugs have short half-lives and can be masked

Has technology not advanced since the Robin Friday days - blood tests etc.? Or is it too expensive to try this?

Of course it has, but look how long it takes to introduce so thin as simple as goal line technology. Drug testing would need to be a global standard too.

Or, most likely, they just don't want to look too deeply...

AFAIK they still rely on just blood/urine mainly

Given the amount of money floating around in football these days its not a money issue. At least not in the major leagues. The could of course just copy cycling and have a biological passport that they brought in after the EPO shambles of the 90s/00s. Its not a perfect system but does catch people and teams can have access to the data before signing a rider.

They easily could, but for some reason they don't do they?

Frankly, lolz @ the idea cycling could teach the rest of the sporting world anything about dope testing.

Besides, probably an issue for another thread but I for one don’t believe for a minute professional football isn’t rife with (performance enhancing) drug abuse. Wenger was spot on – the fact that hardly anyone is being caught is proof in itself.

The best way to know would be publicising all tests.

In the book, incidentally, he mentions that players who spend a long time out with indistinct injuries might have other problems.
That's a bit obvious, really, but its nice to hear.

Hence Jack Wilshere's "ankle" injury that kept him out for almost a season....

The FA knew that publicly announcing his problem would almost ruin his career and hurt the English national team.

Anyone know who the player he is on about that came from Scottish football to Sunderland (previously with Arsenal)?

Heard a similar thing about Tomas Rosicky who was out for a long time with a seemingly vague injury problem. It must put clubs in a difficult position if these issues do crop up, after all these players are often financial assets. The choice is cover it up and protect the value of the asset or hang them out to dry (a la Mutu / Chelsea) then use the courts to try and recover transfer fee. AFAIK Chelsea are still trying to get their money off Mutu who keeps appealing the judgement against him in a legal battle that has gone on for nine years now.

Actually it was 'resolved' not so long ago (last month)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24587804

Juventus and Livorno have been ordered to pay some of the £14m compensation Adrian Mutu owes to ex-club Chelsea.

I don't think that will be the end of it, both of the clubs involved have already said they'll appeal that ruling.

Rofl. He's being interviewed on C4 news shortly. They've distorted his voice but not so that it isn't utterly, completely obvious who it is.

Why does the charade continue?
