England world cup squad & starting XI

by St. Brynjar » 20 Nov 2013 16:30

I'm aware there's a similar thread, but that one is asking based on present injuries. Anyway, name your squad & starting line up then have a got at people for not having the same opinion as you.

Keepers
Hart, Foster, Forster. Sorry Alex.

Defenders
Cole, Baines, Dawson, Cahill, Jagielka, Jones, Walker, Johnson.

Midfielders
Gerrard, Carrick, Wilshere, Barry.

Wingers
Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Welbeck, Townsend.

Strikers
Rooney, Sturridge, Defoe, Lambert.

There'll probably be injuries/loss of form that allow Milner, Lampard, Smalling, Gibbs, Carroll, Lallana or Cleverly in.

I'd start with:

(Hart in goal)

If that's the best you can do then it must be a half decent team : )

Hart, Forster, Ruddy
Walker, Johnson
Baines, Cole
Jagielka, Cahill
Lescott, Smalling
Gerrard, Wilshire, Carrick, Ox, Lampard
Townsend, Walcott
Welbeck, Milner
Rooney, Lambert
Sturridge

Lallana might make it in for Milner or Ox depending on how he does through the season.

All depending on all players been fit and on top form

Keepers
Hart, Foster, Forster.

Defenders
Cole, Baines, Cahill, Jagielka, Lescott, Jones, Walker

Midfielders
Gerrard, Carrick, Wilshere, Lampard, Barkley

Wingers
Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Welbeck, Townsend

Strikers
Rooney, Sturridge, Defoe, Carroll

In contention
Butland, Glen Johnson, Shaw, Smalling, Caulker, Adam Johnson (I don't think theres a better left sided option if he's on top form), Lallana, Ince, Lambert plus potentially some of the younger ones from the U21's if they really kick on (not convinced by the hype around Morrison at the moment).

Starting line up would be (4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1)
Hart
Walker
Cole
Jagielka
Lescott
Gerrard
Carrick (not a fan of his and would rather Wilshire but he needs to get back to passing not running into tackles)
Walcott
Rooney
Townsend
Sturridge

Personally would love to see John Terry back for England. Would improve the back immensely.

However I'd go with

Hart

A Cole
Cahill
Jagielka
Walker

Carrick
Gerrard
Lampard
Townsend
Sturridge

Rooney

Quite depressing reading and hardly any variations.
There really is a dearth of talent at the moment and regrettably the squad almost picks itself.

Well, we have got a full picture of who are going to rock the English fans in Brazil. The squad seems to be complete, but the following squad can also be a good combination.

Goalkeeper:
Joe Hart (some possibility for Jack Butland)

Right-back:
Glen Johnson, Kyle Walker

Left-back:
Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole

Central Defence:
Gary Cahill, John Terry, Phil Jagielka

Midfield:
Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Frank Lampard, Theo Walcott, Ross Barkely, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Attack:
Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck, Rickie Lambert

The above squad is not an obvious list, but a list of some potential players who have already managed to command Hodgson's admiration. So, we can certainly hope to see those guys playing for England. Happy watching!

Would be nice to take Nathaniel Chalobah along - great ball player centre back.

When was the last time he played centre half though?

Didn't he play all last season in midfield? I know whenever I've seen him for the England sides over the last 2 or 3 of years he's been playing right back or in the middle.

He is one of the better prospects coming through. I also agree with someone the other day who said that generally the players coming through now are more comfortable playing a technical game than previous generations. The big test, and it's the FA Commissions job I guess, is to find a way of turning these promising 16-20 year olds into the kind of players who can compete with the best in the world.

That's the point, he's comfortable playing anywhere really. Versatile innit.

Theres another name for that. Jack of all trades master of none.. And Phil Jones can do that better than he can! Bringing an unproven 20 year old who hasnt been capped and never player a season in the premiership is a good way to waste a spot.

Maybe I meant the Plane home from the holiday they take after they've been knocked out of World Cup at the group stage.
