BFTG - Blackburn (a)

by Pepe the Horseman » 23 Nov 2013 18:13

We were awful, really awful in the first half. A couple of good saves from McCarthy, and we didn't go anywhere near their goal.

Second half, Williams and Akpan came on for Alf and Baird, wanted Williams to do well, but he was mostly chasing shadows, Akpan looked ok, some nice touches and nowhere near as bad as he has been.

We looked much better 2nd half, and dominated, without really threatening, apart from the most blatant penalty I've ever seen in my life. If that was in the prem we'd be hearing about it for weeks. Absolutely disgraceful decision to not give the penalty, but to book Gunter as well was just ridiculous.

All in all, it was a shit game, that we should've won 1-0 via a penalty.

More or less exactly the same BFTG summary of most away games this season then.

Would be glad to hear from those few that went how Obita played.
So far,IMHO,his performances don't warrant regular selection but I get the impression that by playing him the manager is saying "Look, I am doing what I was told to do and am picking players who have come through the academy system".
I would have thought that Jobi could still offer more at this stage.

I am all for bringing young players through but not as some sort of quota system and so far I don't feel that Obita has done enough to warrant a regular first team place in a side committed to trying to achieve promotion and the same goes for Robson-Kanu.
McCarthy on the other hand is a star and was already a star before Nigel came.

Nobody played well (except one brilliant save from McCarthy), nobody played especially badly (though ALF was anonymous). Nothing much happened in a fairly nondescript game. Referee missed a blatant penalty for us. The joys of midtable championship football on a grey chilly afternoon in Blackburn.

Plusses were Pearce and McCarthy in particular with Akpan doing well when he came on and Obita doing well with some of his deliveries from dead balls.

4-4-2 didn't work in the first half with Guthrie and Baird outnumbered by Cairney, Dunn and Lowe so credit to Adkins for changing it half time - as the previous poster indicated, it had been awful until then. The second half was an improvement.

A clear penalty although Gunter struggled with the pace of King and Kelly still looks uncomfortable at left back. No atmosphere whatsoever from either set of supporters.

Some ratings, bearing in mind I'd always be inclined to be less harsh than some:

McCarthy 8
Gunter 6
Kelly 5
Gorkss 6
Pearce 7
Baird 5
Guthrie 6
Obita 6
McCleary 5
Le Fondre 5
Pogrebnyak 6

Subs:

Akpan 7
Williams 6
Blackman - too little time

Excellent save from McCarthy in the first half, and Akpan looked very good when he came on, chasing players down and some good passing (bar one awful pass to no-one).

Otherwise, that was poor. Gorkks especially was slow, clumsy and useless.

Not giving the penalty was ridiculous, absolutely stonewall penalty, absolutely fuming about that still, but it was a comedy moment as all our fans slowly realised the decision wasn't going our way.

Least enjoyable away game so far this year, was all round crap and dull.

We're crying out for another skillful, pacey winger. If only we didn't sell our best to Palace. HRK, Obita, and sadly Jobi don't fit that description anymore.

Any clean sheet against a team with Jordan Rhodes is worth commending. It's just a shame we're so toothless going forward.

First season in years I was actually looking forward too. I thought, with our team, we would be flying high and playing good football.

This is shit
