It was acknowledged within the club that we were as good as down by then. The players certainly knew it, anyway, no matter what the sound bites said.

Adkins was a long-term appointment once Brian had effectively sealed our fate.

That is one thing i completely disagree with. As good as down? Sealed our fate?

Just like we were as good as down after getting hammered at Plymouth? Or our fate was sealed after losing 4 of our first 6 in 2011, leaving us next to no chance of winning the league? No one gave us a prayer. Or 2 down with minutes to go v Chelsea, 3 down with 10 to go v WBA? Out of the cup at Anfield & Hawthorns?

I'll agree we were pretty likely to go down, but through his entire reign we sucedded out of seemingly impossible situations.

How many times could Wigan have sacked Roberto Martinez when they were 'as good as down'?

Pandoras Box
Brian was sacked as the job he was doing wasn't deemed good enough therefore we brought in someone who was deemed to be a more suitable candidate

Surely McD was sacked because the invisible man could see next year's tasty Prem football treasures slowly slipping out of sight week by week which he desperately needed in order to pay SJM for the shares?
He took a last roll of the dice - booted McD out and tried to appoint a new messiah who could either keep us up with a few wins from a different style or else his betting slip would be thrown in the bin and he would vanish from the betting shop. Rings true?

Completely.

Atkins is taking this club to League Two, with his mediocre signings and his mediocre management skills. He is the David Brent of the touchline.

That's what Southampton fans said after his first six months there, plus rude comments about signing Lambert. Turned out alright there.

Drenthe has looked far from mediocre when he's played. He just needs to keep fit!
Williams has looked far from mediocre when he's played...
Bridge has been superb this season.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're pulling our chain?

Ironically, in a thread where some can't let go of their former manager, it's his mediocre signings that are holding us back...

Yes!
You're right, these situations are identical.

It's his schtick; leave him to it.
He knows full well the name of the manager is Nige Ladkins, but he finds it amusing to deliberately get it wrong.
To that I say, he is a disgrace. But make no mistake, he knows what he is doing.

Still, Nige made darn sure we went down, if there had been any doubt up to that point.

If Anton phones Brian to explain it was a mistake, maybe saying he meant to back him rather than sick him, and that there was a Russian accent or translation problem, he can come back, and everything will be nice again.

Drenthe? Couple of twenty-minuter show-pony performances then knackered or injured the rest of the time.
Williams? Couple of cameo appearances as sub where he looked good, been pretty poor in the few games he has started and has been injured the rest of the time.
Bridge? Looked very decent but can't string two successive games together due to injuries and now he'll be out for a while.

Clue: Injury-prone/over-the-hill footballers being injured all the time isn't bad luck. It is bad transfer dealings :!:

Our best performers this season have been Morrison - McDermott signing - & (in patches) Guthrie - McDermott signing.

Would that be the same Morrison loaned out to Huddersfield; who was then offered to Huddersfield as a make weight in trying to get Jordan Rhodes and who rarely got a game under Brian?

And would that be the same Guthrie who was played out of position and so refused to play for the team and who was subsequently dropped and who rarely got a game again until after Brian left?

Just saying..........

He played large chunks of last season once we'd packed Gorkss in and decided that Pearce wasn't going to play. He looked the best of our 4 centre-halves under Brian last season, frankly :!:

Brian's relationship with Guthrie was clearly atrocious, takes two to tango as they say. Tbh, I don't think that Guthrie has been nearly as good as many and - naturally - he himself thinks he has this season. In all honesty it was a struggle to pick out two consistently decent performers in this most moribund of seasons so far :!:

I'd actually count our best players this season, Morro, Pog and Guthrie, as Nigel's men - not Brian's. McD might have signed 'em but he didn't play 'em or even like 'em. Nigel's managed to get the best out of Brian's signings, even if his own have yet to demonstrate value.

All the best,
I like Both,
