Guthrie

by Delboy » 08 Dec 2013 12:10

I admit I am not a Guthrie fan, since his refusal to go to Sunderland last year. I also think that we play too many balls through him in midfield which slows the game down . Next week he is suspended , will we miss him, not a lot of options in midfield. I would play Obita/Williams/McCanuff/McLeary definitely not Akpan. Thoughts!

The suspension has come at a good time. He can have a rest, refocus, and come back better.

He had been having a great season, but was abysmal yesterday, almost like matejovsky at times in his profligacy with the ball leading to opposition goals. He wouldn't be my choice of captain either.

He thought he had his worst game in a Reading shirt yesterday, personally

Actually, not sure he thought that, not sure the team are that self aware after some of the post match comments.

I thought it though. :?

I agree with him. It wasn't through anything more than a bit of staleness hopefully and when he returns he will be back to the pre-Baird form when he wanted to do intelligent things every time he got the ball and didn't panic every time defenders got near him.

Just to clarify, we have players called McCarthy, McAnuff, and McCleary. We do not have players called McArthy, McCanuff, or McLeary.

+1

Guthrie's at his best in the middle third with passing options to wingers, fullbacks, his central midfield partner, one striker playing on the shoulder and one attacker dropping a little deeper. That requires a bit of movement from his team mates.

He's at his worst in our third sitting between the defenders passing to them to hoof or just being bypassed by them cutting straight to the hoof.

He lets himself drop too deep when things aren't going well, just like yesterday. We're not playing as a team. We've not got enough movement. We're not showing for the ball and forming nice triangles for easier passing. No surprise he then plays badly. Although I'm not excusing him, he's still part of that problem.

Until recently, yes. Fast being overtaken by Pog, Pearce, McCarthy and Bridge should be in the running too

Would be nice if Bridge was actually running.

I don't want McAnuff anywhere central midfield. I'd sooner see D'Ath or Tish get a chance in a position they're suited too than a flagging midfielder who offers nothing in midfield.

Not a holding midfielder he is more of a threat going forward in the final third.

For me Guthrie gives the ball away too often and cheaply.....Anyone got any stats on his pass success rate this season ?

Going to agree with this solely because of Dean.

That said I think it'll be interesting to see how we cope without him and if our style changes at all because atm everything's going through him and that's not always a positive. Matejovski I think is a great comparison.

Like Matejovski, he certainly polarises opinion
