Team for Watford

The only time we have won recently was without Guthie in the team. I have been a fan of Guthrie this season with some of his performances, but he has not done anything recently and I think he should be on the subs bench. Maybe he has been more of a negative influence on the field then we need. McAnuff could do a decent defensive midfield role.

I have shown Drenthe behind Pog, but I think giving Taylor a run in the team might be a good shout and give the young lad some decent experience and bringing Drenthe on at 60 mins might be a better idea. Anything that leads to us playing some decent football over the dross we have been would be welcomed, even if we were to lose.

I genuinely believe he could do a decent job in a defensive midfield position. Guthrie has been poor recently, I wouldn't want McAnuff in an attacking position because of his incredibly poor shots on target ratio. But he has lots of experience and I think that can be put to good use when sat infront of the back four, in my humble opinion.

To be fair to McAnuff, it is mostly a particular type of chance that he struggles to get on target, when he cuts in from the left. If you played him behind the striker, he would get different chances altogether.

On current form, Blackman should play.

--------------McCarthy--------------
Gunter---Hector---Pearce----Kelly
----------Guthrie---Williams-------
Blackman-------Taylor-------Obita
-----------------Pogrebnyak--------

Subs: Federici, Gorkss, Cummings, McAnuff, McCleary, Drenthe, Sharp

The three attacking midfielders have energy and something to prove, hopefully they'll make themselves available for passes more than Drenthe and McCleary do.

I wouldn't object to:

- Feds ahead of McCarthy
- Cummings ahead of Kelly or Gunter
- Drenthe or McAnuff ahead of Taylor and/or Obita
- Sharp ahead of Taylor in a 4-4-2 with Le Fondre coming onto the bench

4-2-3-1, could easily be 4-4-2. Dependent on injuries etc

I'd like to see Akpan given a chance and Williams hasn't impressed me yet. If fit, Blackman needs to start either on the wing or up front. Not impressed with Pearce recently. Feds was decent by all accounts against Brighton so wouldn't mind him keeping his place.

Interesting that people want to throw Hector straight into the side when he has only been back with us for a few days.
I find it hard to forget some of the stuff that I saw when he was at Barnet-admittedly he is a couple of years older now but I would expect him to be around the squad for a couple of weeks more before throwing him in.
Let's not forget that after nearly a year most of our players still don't know how to play Nigel's way so it's a bit much to expect Hector to fit in immediately at a level higher than he has ever played at.

Not being mean or anything, but I think you made a mistake in editing. Who did you want on the bench?

Love the formation though. We need someone with Drenthe's skill and creativity in the free role.

I recall McAnuff saying a while back that he might finish his career at full back.
Maybe now is the time - I'm not sure he can offer the same threat in advanced
positions thathe used to, and having him and Hector would increase the ball
playing abilities of our back four, essential to the NA style.

A risk defensively, but it's not as if the previous plans have been working well in that respect.
Also think we need three CMs, and tell Drenthe and Blackman to get well forward.

Ideally we'd have a proper DM in there somewhere, but that's not an option at the moment.

So many of us are all bigging up Hector-bit unfair on the lad-no doubt we will all come down on him when he makes the inevitable howler because of his inexperience at this level. But he really cannot be worse than the current two CBs and Morrison has not improved over the last year or so.

Like the idea of McAnuff at LB - always looked better defensively than in attacking positions the past couple of seasons IMO.
Other than that, pretty much that team but with Akpan for McCleary and Drenthe moving more centrally.

Hector has to start.
If he can't get into the First X1 now then he might as well hand in a transfer request.
