@jonathanl50
In @getreading 2moro, find out the big #readingfc player who could be on the move and the #lirfc player set for a surprise start on Sat.

McCarthy then? They've been bigging up Federici this week...

Hoping McAnuff.

I wouldn't class Alf or McAnuff as a 'big' player tbf. It says a lot about this team when I genuinely couldn't care less which player it is. Been a long time since I felt like that.

Got to be De'Juane Taylor-Crossdale. Biggest name at the club.

Michael Hector the surprise starter and McCarthy on his way are my two guesses.

This, not bothered about any of the current squad leaving; don't feel a connection with any of them.

Adkins fears Premier League interest in Alex McCarthy

Nigel Adkins fears he could lose Alex McCarthy this month if a Premier League club makes a move for his highly-rated goalkeeper.

McCarthy has been linked with several top-flight sides this season with Arsenal the latest to reportedly show an interest.

Newcastle and Southampton are also said to be interested and with the transfer window now open, Royals’ boss knows that someone may come knocking for the 24-year-old.

The same goes for Adam Federici who impressed when handed a rare start ahead of McCarthy during Saturday’s 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Brighton.

So Adkins says it is vital that he still has at least one of his two main stoppers to call upon by the time the window closes at 11pm on January 31.

He said: “I think both goalkeepers will be courted by other clubs.

“We’ve got to make sure that come the end of the transfer window we’ve definitely got one of them.

“Whichever one is with us, will definitely gives us a great opportunity.

“I would like to keep both of them because I want us to be as strong as possible.

“But sometimes you have to be understanding of a situation that could arise.”

Adkins added: “At this moment in time I’m expecting them both to be here.

“But who knows what will happen through the window?

“From a goalkeeping point of view there is probably a snowball effect. If a Premier League club moves someone on then they will be looking for a keeper.

“And you would think that both of ours would then be in the equation. We’ll just have to see what happens.”

Focusing on McCarthy, Adkins says Reading have yet to receive a bid for the shot-stopper despite all the reported interest.

“As far as I’m aware there’s not been any offer whatsoever for Alex,” he said.

“He’s with us and there’s been no indication that he’s going anywhere else.”

Adkins has also warned McCarthy that a switch to the top flight may not be the best thing for his career.

The Reading manager cites Stoke City keeper Jack Butland as a good example of what can happen to a player if they move on too soon.

Butland was playing regularly for Birmingham in the Championship before securing a big money move to the Potters last year.

He has not been able to dislodge Asmir Begovic at the Britannia Stadium, however, and was farmed out on loan to Barnsley earlier this season.

“Alex needs to be playing,” said Adkins.

“I believe he will go on and be a top four goalkeeper in the Premier League. He’s got the capability of doing that.

“But I think it’s more beneficial that he plays with us.

“Look at Jack Butland for example. He wasn’t even on the bench at Stoke and has ended up going out on loan to Barnsley.”

McCarthy is expected to return to the side for tomorrow’s trip to Watford (3pm kick-off) despite Federici’s impressive display at Brighton last weekend.

Club captain Jobi McAnuff should also return to face his former club having missed the last three games due to a foot injury.

If you were a top flight fan or manager and you had to choose between Feds and McCarthy, who would you go for?

Top four club looking for a longer-term (semi-punt) on a home grown understudy - Alex Mac

Bottom half side looking for competition for their current no.1 - Fedders

McCarthy will be off in the summer, think that is quite evident.

If we can get a bit more to sell him in this inflated loan window with loan back for rest of season, why not?
