Elm Park Old Boy I agree AlF is a luxury for a team that creates few chances.

But - sorry if this is a radical suggestion - maybe we should try to set up the team to create some more chances. Personally, when you have a finisher who has been proven to be as good as ALF, I would want to organise the team around exploiting that.

I suspect he'll leave, but I for one will always appreciate his contribution. Especially the goals that put Southampton to the sword in the run-in to promotion (I suspect Adkins feels differently about those two...)

So how do you do that?

To play him effectively you've probably got to play two upfront. That means playing four in midfield in a league where most teams play an extra man, and if they don't in this league they certainly do in the Premier League where we want to be developing towards (even if it's not working right now!). Modern trends mean that to play 4-4-2 your midfield has got to be excellent.

Meanwhile, Adkins multiple choice approach to formations and the deplorable strike rates they produce, is looking more likely to lead us to League One rather than the promised land :|

yep 14 points from the third relegation place and 1 point from the play offs. Maths tells us which is more likely.

Err, no, current form tells us which is more likely.

EDIT

And you can you can add being 19pts from the top of the table and 13pts behind 2nd place Burnley :|

Sky Bet have opened the betting on Adam Le Fondre’s future, with Leeds the 6/1 favourites to sign him in this window. Middlesbrough are 7/1 while Celtic can be backed at 8/1.

Work rate and all round contribution much better today (IMO), sadly wasted a very good chance that Pog set up for him in the second half.

Uke So has anyone come knocking for Alfie?

No, because he is shite. League 1/2 quality is all he is.......not good enough for the championship.

Did nothing yesterday. Adkins is giving him the chance but I'd rather Blackman instead of Alf. Gives us more options and can play deeper if needed.

ALF should get a run of 5 games ahead of all our other back up striking options to get a chance to prove himself. His scoring record this season is excellent, including from starting. He may not do a huge amount, but he's the most likely of our squad to score regularly.

Pog's been playing really well for a few months now, and he's still not scoring regularly enough. We need someone who will put away chances when they get them. Yes he's missed a few easier chances, but generally when in and out. Even considering that his shot to goal ratio is good.

Player / shots per game / shot to goal ratio
ALF / 1.3 / 3.4:1
Pog / 1.8 / 6:1
Sharp / 0.9 / 4.5:1
Blackers / 0.9 / 7.5:1
McCleary / 1.5 / 17:1

Needs to get into the game more, but that should come with a bit of continuity and game time. If it doesn't and he isn't scoring at the end of those 5 games, then by all means rotate.

I'm OK with giving Le Fondre a chance if he works hard for the team like he did yesterday. However, anyone who suggests that he currently should start in preference to Pog needs measuring up for their straitjacket!

I just cannot see us letting ALF go this window unless we are bringing in at least 2 new strikers.

It looks like Roberts is retiring so we only have Pog and ALF currently and even if Sharp returns we would be really risking it just having Sharp and Pog if we want to try and reach the play offs. Whatever Adkin thinks of him it would be madness to let ALF go without replacing him.

Absolutely this.

When did everyone go from complaining about not having four or five good strikers to wanting only two?

Oh yeah, the table really suggests that! What is it now? - just 3 wins needed to be pretty much sure of being safe from relegation!

I can't be arsed to trawl back through the ALF fan club postings but seriously, one or two were mad enough to suggest that!
