3points paddy20 I would suggest the next time Guthrie plays keep an eye on what he does. I have done this for the last 3 home games and was surprised at how little he offered. I was a fan of his but I think he as they say he ' flatters to deceive'. He passes back a lot to the centre halves. He passes sideways. He does about 3 long passes to the wings. He passes twice into the front players but either they or he are not on the same wavelength. He loses his marker on a number of occasions. He rarely tackles. He has less than one shot on goal per game. He looks comfortable when in possession. He slows the game down when in possession.
I thought it would be interesting to see how the team plays without him. Q.E.D
Yep, did exactly the same against Wigan. He made three forward passes in the first half. He is so slow as well. Doesn't anticipate the second ball, doesn't track his runners. However, he was really good in the first couple of months when he had someone doing all the water carrying for him. Would like to see him play further forward, but now really understand why he didn't fit in with what McD wanted from him
Once teams figured out that everything went through him (Millwall sticking Nadjim Abdou on him all game was the first time he was man marked IIRC, and he was pretty dire), his effectiveness has decreased.
He was POTM for the first two months on The Tilehurst End (as voted by some of you hopefully
), yet in December posted the worst average player ratings of all regular starters.
Think he's a player who is a luxury for this level, but doesn't have the class/bustle for the next, hence why Newcastle let him go and didn't retain him as a squad player.
