Ian Royal Gunter is a good player with a lot of potential. He's good defensively and he's very good going forward. However, he has a big problem with lapses in concentration / casualness that means he'll make two or three dangerous mistakes most weeks. And they really are simple basic errors mostly. Loose passes to the opposition, passes into trouble, tripping over the ball, poor positioning. Making a foul throw yesterday for example.

In his defence he often doesn't get a lot of help from the player infront of him. McCleary, HRK and Obita are not great defensively. Drenthe could be a lot better too. Our fullbacks miss that side of McAnuff and Kebe's game sometimes.

Kelly is a better right back by some way. But he's not as pacey and attacking. It's clear Adkins prefers Gunter's style of attacking full back to Kelly's more reserved nature.

Gunter is improving all the time and long may it continue, great attitude. Having a marauding fullback to contend with as well as a winger will always cause problems, creates space and takes a game to the opposition.

Haha PS I love the shrewd opportunism to promote Jobi and demote his rival wingers. Very subtle  Its becoming quite predictable now, everyone agreed Jobi played well when he came on. I thought all the wingers who played yesterday put in a shift to help out defensively

But of all of our wingers McAnuff is the most adept defensively. He has his lapses but he provides a lot more support than the others who are more attacking.

Easily one of our best players at the moment. Solid but unspectacular, possible contender for POTS should Guthrie continue his indifferent form and Pog go off the boil.

I do. Best fullback in the league according to who? an impartial Reading fan who happens to be one of Gunters most vocal supporters? I'll take your word on it

Gunter's a better coice than Kelly, because they're different types of players and Gunter fits what Adkins wants better. But Kelly is definitely the better defender. Shame he can't play left back effectively, although he'd still have the problem of not fitting the right style.

I think Gunter's been going about his work pretty efficiently. As long as he's got a player to cover him then he works well. Admittedly he still gets caught too much.

My thoughts exactly.

Surly it's time he got a bit of appreciation with a song of his own?

Run run run run Gunter?

You still prefer Kelly

What is your problem with Gunts, specifically?

Been solid defensively all season and offered an option going forward, cant ask for anymore.

People just needed someone to hate after our poor start in the Prem, its boring now.

I dont hate Gunter. I like Gunter. He's a good player. I don't hold last season against any player. I think his form has been good too and right now hes undroppable. I still think Kelly is a better player. Simple as that. Much like I don't hold last season's form against him I don't hold this seasons form as a mark of his quality. Hes playing well yes. Great! Doesnt make him a better player than Kelly. It does mean he is on good form. And thats great. Im not going to change my opinion based on 4 months form compared to Kellys form in a position he is shit in.

Fair enough, but Adkins has had enough time to make a fair assessment and clearly feels Gunter is the better player.

I knew gunter was always a good player
The fact he likes to get forward so much but has the engine to get back very quickly makes the oppositions fullback and winger think twice about attacking and leaving space in behind.
He is one of the first names on the team sheet now
Good on him

He certainly suits the tactics much better! And i have no problem with that. His partnership with McCleary and now with Obita capable of mirroring him means our defence is getting stronger
Also if Gunter is the best full back in the league then it should be said Gunter is the best benched full back

I cant believe anyone still rates kelly above gunter.

Kelly is poor on the left and right.

He was ok when he joined but has been exposed time and time again this season.

Chris gunter is the best right back at the club.
He has impoved alot since last season and derserves his space in the starting 11.to me he has in most matches deserved MOTM and will be a contender for player of the season.Fair play Chris gunter.

How any times has Kelly played right back this season? I make it a maximum of 2. Leeds and Charlton. Both of which we won 1-0. I don't recall him being badly exposed in either of them.

Being shit at Left Back this season, doesn't mean he's stopped being a very good Right Back.
