A sad end to the career of a player who was a catalyst for a great run to the Championship title and gave Reading a profile in the media, with his insightful views on a range of subjects, that wasn't there before.

Sad news, although not a surprise. I will never forget the electrifying impact he had on our team in early 2012, and for that will always be grateful.

I'm not doubting his efforts to get back fit or rubbishing any of his achievements, nor did I criticise the extension to his contract. It's been an unspoken truth for ages now that he'd probably not play for RFC (or anyone for that matter) again, why not just come out and say that he's working hard but it's extremely unlikely he'll ever play again, rather than drip feeding information about set back after set back, that he's x amount of weeks away, or has run on grass today, etc?

Because he probably didn't want to believe that himself?

I think he was desperate to get back, even if it was only for a couple of substitute appearances. He's a commited pro and wouldn't have been easy to accept that his career was over, hence all the different rehab options he's gone through.

Point taken. It may not have been him however but part of the awful PR machine that lead us to believe we were on the edge of new ownership

Someone posted a great photo of him fishing with two beers. That's what i'm going to do when i retire too (and most wekends in the summer)!
A lot of footballers go into depression following retirement. They are unable to fill the void that professional football has left and find it difficult to come to terms with it.
I wonder how much of this played a part in him taking so long to decide on the inevitable?

Because maybe experts being paid large amounts of money to keep his rehab attempts going kept telling him that he had a chance of playing again if things went well and that he could be x weeks away?
