I can exclusively reveal which Championship clubs have a racism problem. They are: Derby, Middlesbrough, Doncaster. For these are the away games which Reading played “in the last couple of years” of Jason Roberts career which I didn’t attend in person. These must be the games he was referring to in which he was racially abused, because I sure as hell didn’t hear any abuse at the games I attended. Of course, it is often difficult to hear the home crowd over Reading’s raucous, passionate and barmy away following. And of course as a footballer, Roberts travels all four corners of the pitch. It is puzzling however that in all those matches I attended, no-one else appeared to react to any abuse from the crowd – be it player, coaching staff, official – so it makes me wonder whether Roberts has the hearing my brother used to have when his imaginary friend told him to flood the bathroom.

What a lousy programme ‘Terrace Hate’ was. We saw:

Homophobic abuse at/directed towards Brighton.
Anti-semitic abuse directed at Spurs (by those nice people, West Ham and Chelsea).
Millwall fans singing racist songs at Leicester.
A solitary Forest fan sing a racist song directed at Leicester.
A group of presumably Everton-supporting kids (who weren’t even at a match) singing a racist song about Sturridge.

Obviously there are problems there, but the Brighton one (albeit unfortunate) is rather unique. As is the Spurs one, in fact their own supporters have issues with singing slogans which might be deemed offensive to Jews. Millwall, West Ham and Chelsea have a history of issues and some NF links.

To say that football grounds are awash with homophobia and racism each and every week is just not true in my opinion and in my experience.

The problem is, it obviously still happens - but programmes like this give deniers ammunition.

I think there's a world of difference between the game being "awash with racism and homophobia" and it still being a problem at times.

I've heard racist and homophobic remarks from Reading fans plenty of times in the last 2 or 3 years. I'm rarely pitchside though so can't vouch for how much a player might catch but I'd be very surprised if there weren't instances where opposition fans dish it out in a way that players like Roberts can hear.

I just like the way that, because it's not "widespread", a couple of hundred West Ham fans singing "I'd rather be a paki than a Jew" is a silly thing to be concerned about.

The imitating of the noise gas chambers make by Chelsea fans was a particular lowlight. Not that it's a problem of course, Jason Roberts probably did that himself over the f/cking tannoy.

Not a lot of support for Campbells claims from the rest of the available talking heads, although I'm not sure Roberts has had his say yet.

I'm not sure that Taylor and co quite grasp how institutional racism works though. I don't think even Campbell was suggesting the FA explicitly told managers to avoid having a black captain.
