Extended-Phenotype Ignoring my hyperbole It is kinda universally accepted that Reading underspent going up, during the prem season and the summer following.

Not sure if there is much contrary to that in previous years either.

Underspent only in terms of keeping us in the Prem

We just can't afford it

I. Know.

The notion we bankrupt ourselves by not spending this money we apparently don't have is therefore a m u s i n g .

Well there's underspending in comparison to those clubs that are significantly overspending and then there's underspending compared to what we can afford.

The facts tell you that the odd season aside the latter certainly isn't true.

"What we can afford" isn't being argued here. "What we can afford" is not normal football lexicon.

I agree. Seems even austerity does jack shit for you in the end. If you can't afford football, don't get involved. Certainly don't go around signing Hope Akpan and bankrupting your club paying his wages.

Harpers So Solid Crew Total monthly wages are over 2 mill. Therefore the next three months requires over 6 mill. Income now is at its lowest point of the financial year, we know that we borrowed against the parachute payments with interest. We have to assume the only has already been spent. So about the only way seems to be to borrow against next seasons parachute payment, which would mean further cuts in money to spend on the team.

Well, yeah, given it was about £4m a month last year I'm sure it is.

I'm not sure why we have to make that assumption at all. Seems a big old leap with no evidence.

Why are you talking about Akpan when the obvious culprits you completely ignore are Guthrie and Pogrebnyak, both players who would have commanded sizeable fees if they'd been in contract and certainly commanded big wages. Both on a completely different level to the sort of signings we made last time we were in the PL.

Just because we don't have to pay another club for a player doesn't mean they are free. Transfer fees which you seem obsessed with being the only measure of a club's spending, are far less relevant than the wages, which you ignore.

Have you actually checked the comparative wage spending of clubs like Wigan, QPR, Sunderland, Villa, Stoke, Norwich, West Brom, West Ham, Fulham, Swansea to us? Or are you just jizzing off at transfer headlines from Sky?

I'd be very surprised if our wage bill is only 2 million a month in honestly. That's only 24 mill a year. When I was doing back of the envelope guesses at 30 million.

Well that would mean slashing it by 22m in a year.

Cancelling Hope Akpan's contract will sort that out though apparently.

Point still stands. Reading FC going into administration following our record in the transfer market, would be hilarious.

Leeds is £2m a year, so ours is most certainly higher than that having gone up and the wages doubling, then coming down and the wages reducing by a third (based on the last relegation and accounts, I expect a similar trend)
