Have a friend at the Chronic who has been working there a while on the paper, turns out from what he has heard at work today that the editor apparently doesn't really think he's done much wrong and that it is going to sell papers.

Not quite sure on the logic of the editor, who I have been told was having a good read of this thread earlier, who seems to be looking at short term sales (From who, I have no idea), vs losing a big potential population of sales from Reading fans who are unlikely to ever be buying the paper anytime soon!

FAO Reading Chronicle editor - I hope you let Anthony Smith punch you in the face, as clearly you have no clue as to how to edit a paper. Feel quite sorry for him, as clearly it doesn't have anything to do with the Sports team.

This has to be the best bit surely:

October 26 , 2013 v Millwall. Score 1-1
During the match police were told Reading supporters had
racially abused a Millwall player. Reading FC sent two plain
clothes staff to sit in the area and, after speaking to other fans,
they established that no racial abuse had been used and there
had actually been chants about the player being fat.

It takes something pretty spectacular to unite just about every fan of RFC behind the club and Sir John, especially these days...

It has to be said that the worst part of the whole story is the front page by a long way. The editor has gone to absolute town on a story that might otherwise have been greeted with an  .

The Millwall example is my very favourite!

The front page is atrocious.

The rest of the article is merely the police and stewards trying to justify their meaningless existence within football stadia, with the reporter helping to sex them up a bit with phrases like 'riotous royals' (used to describe an incident which involved 2 perpetrators, at most)

I did actually laugh out loud at that bit. Brilliant stuff.

With respect Hillsborough will always be linked indirectly with hooliganism.
If it wasn't for the hooligans in the first place there would have been no fences needed to control them and, henceforth no disaster at Sheffield.

I shouldnt, but LOL.

That front page is quite, quite extraordinary. Pretty much the whole credibility of your hooligan knowledge goes out of the window if you think they wear a Reading shirt, hide their face with a reading scarf, and wield a 2 by 4.
Its quite obvious the editor has never been to a game. Never. I mean Never.
Brilliant stuff, its like reading The Onion.

The Chronicle are just trying to use football as the typical journalistic punching bag, and are about 10 years late to the party on that front. Football has done plenty to try and clean up it's act, and picking RFC fans as a target for a sensationalist piece to boost short term revenue is pretty pathetic. And drudging up nothing incidents that are a mere by product of having 24,000 people packed into one area filled with booze and testosterone as 'evidence' for a hooliganism problem being present is about as desperate as it gets. No doubt the author of the piece is a rugby fan.

tbh I'm mightily relieved that the Brighton seat throwing incident was "the low point of a catalogue of hooliganism carried out by Reading fans at stadia across the country over the last two seasons."

I saw that first hand and if that is the lololololow point (of the last two years!!!!) we're doing alright.

Come on then, let's be 'aving the anti-Chronicle and anti-Nick Gutteridge chants? It's the only chance we have of a half-decent atmosphere against Barnsley.

So is Barnsley going to be 'scarves over your face day'? Tooled up with inflatables and high on caffine!

I don't think they've done much wrong either. They seem to have evidence which supports most of it.
