The simple back down could be to just name a stand, let the owner name the stadium. Would perhaps mean more to the original core of fans as the plastics infiltrate with the potential growth. The question is, East or West!

In reality it doesnt matter what it is called to most supporters does it.
History is littered with many wealthy men building a "Folly" somewhere and this is SJM's.
I am not a fan of his at all. Yes he was there when the club was in trouble but i personally dont believe the club would have gone to the wall back then. If not him it would have been somebody else.
In my opionion Reading Football Club has put him on the Map more than he has Reading Football Club.
Now he has the Knighthood he craved and his business's are not doing so well he wants out.
However his Ego will not allow the removal of his name and those white seats across the East Stand.
What would he use for a Chat up line when he is on one of his inevitable benders?
How would he impress the Glitterarty?
What would Paloma Faith think of him?
Sorry to those of you that idolise the man.
Through business contacts i know far too much about him and dont like him (you'd never guess would you).
Swallow your Pride SJM and for once do something that isnt all about you.
We never wanted the Stadium named after you so let it go.
Give up the Penthouse and go live in your Upper Basildon Mansion where you can be surrounded by all those things dear to you ( cars, statues and live sized model of a half naked woman) all viewed through the bottom of a glass.
Thanks for "The Loans" over the years.

It hadn't occurred to me before, but the Royals tag does add so glitz if the owner really is a Royal. We could then haggle about where to put the apostrophe.

Most of these types what a lasting legacy. Most if not all successful people are ego riven once they become 'comfortable'

I am not a fan of his at all. Yes he was there when the club was in trouble but i personally dont believe the club would have gone to the wall back then. If not him it would have been somebody else.

It's pointless debating the if Auntie had balls stuff. Who knows RFC might have become bigger than ManU or smaller than Basingstoke...

In my opionion Reading Football Club has put him on the Map more than he has Reading Football Club.

debatable as RCF were a small town team in a small town ground
going nowhere

Now he has the Knighthood he craved and his business's are not doing so well he wants out.

craved for quite possibly but he got it for his philanthropy and political connections iirc

However his Ego will not allow the removal of his name and those white seats across the East Stand.

I believe he once said "Everyone should have a stadium named after them" Tongue in cheek maybe who knows?

What would he use for a Chat up line when he is on one of his inevitable benders?

"I'm still rich btw" would still work..

How would he impress the Glitterarty?

via his London connections

What would Paloma Faith think of him?

what does she think of him now and why would she matter?

Sorry to those of you that idolise the man.
Through business contacts i know far too much about him and dont like him (you'd never guess would you).

I have met him on a number of occasions over the years and chatted several times and always found him to be pleasant and personable.I also believe him to be an honourable man . I would be interested in your business contacts thoughts though.

Swallow your Pride SJM and for once do something that isnt all about you.
We never wanted the Stadium named after you so let it go.

and 'we' never offered to pay for it either I guess? But yes time to move on

Give up the Penthouse and go live in your Upper Basildon Mansion where you can be surrounded by all those things dear to you ( cars, statues and live sized model of a half naked woman) all viewed through the bottom of a glass.

the penthouse is part of the hotel and run via there. It is not part of the club sale which are separate entities.

Thanks for "The Loans" over the years.

with regard to the club He has always been a businessman not a philanthropist.

I'm hoping that ship hasn't sailed but I don't think the Omani's have been seen there in a wee while.(sadly)

Don't be fcuking stupid. Madman is on an ego trip now BUT the club would of been in a terrible state had he not done what he'd done. OK he loaned us the money for the ground, academy etc. but how many banks would of done that considering our only asset was the crumbling Elm Park back after the 1990 recession which was worse than this one.

We have everything to be thankful for. At Elm Park now we'd probably have gates of 7,000 max, we wouldn't have Obita McCarthy and suchlike and we'd probably be playing AFC Wimbledon and Accrington Stanley at best

a quid plus all the costs of turning us into a top half championship team in a new stadium.
there was no guarantee he would ever get anything from the relationship at the start
in fact it looked like an almost guaranteed loss

Which is about what a site covered in 9 metres of landfill is worth. On top of the waste clearing and decontamination he also had to pay a big chunk of the cost of the A33 relief road.

I watched the new media suite being piled.

Jeeze it stank with rotten garbage nodders nappies Tesco carrier bags and god knows what coming up from the piling screw machine thing. The whole stadium is sinking as you can see from around the walkway around the ground is all wavy and the cost of having two block paving guy's there permanently isn't cheap.

I have been told they have methane fans on the roof sucking up from below ground to stop the whole place blowing up!

Well it's a 24/7 job keeping the Stadium from sinking, you can't turn your back for a second.

Indeed:

http://www.pitchcare.com/magazine/inter ... ading.html

One of the main problems we were facing was subsidence due to the construction of the site itself. We were also having drainage problems, which led to standing water and large areas of the playing surface becoming increasingly soft during prolonged periods of wet weather. This also resulted in us losing a large percentage of our grass coverage over these periods.

Going off topic a bit but the stadium itself is a bit of a joke, I wish we had held off building it a few years and learnt from other club's mistakes.

Lower west concourse is embarrassingly small, stadium constantly sinking, access issues meaning we can't move the away section, not enough area around the ground for pubs/bars/beer tents.

It's a bit annoying really.
