West Stand Flash Reading fans moaning Ugwu has been released when 90% won't have ever seen him play. Idiots

Injury prone & never done anything when on loan. Ta'da.

OK but since January we have had just two strikers ALF an Pog and at this rate two will seem like luxury next season. Ugwu would have been a cheap back up option for one season IMO and given us an option. We had him on the bench in a first team game only recently and so must have thought that there was something about him.

Compare him to Cardwell, 17/18 years old, and you see why he was released.

I did like the look of Ugwu last year and earlier in the season but considering size and pace he should have done better on loan as he's a very much a traditional centre forward. Ruthless business football, I hope he finds a league club to develop at. Needs to be somewhere with low expectations though. Samuel needs to be looking over his shoulder and step it up next season as well.

I've only seen him play once (Against Oman), but the club's been making loads of noise about him, and he's been prolific in the youth leagues, so i think it's fair for people to question his leaving.

As others have pointed out, if you're still playing for the U21 at almost 22, then it's time to move on 'cos you ain't gonna make it here.

Not sure where everyone is getting 22 from for Ugwu, he only turned 21 last month. Still find it an odd decision, Adkins had stuck him on the bench a couple of times since the turn of the year. I'd rather hope he's just decided to leave for more regular first team football.

On Cardwell, did we sign him knowing Ikpeazu was going? He's had the U21 games that I reckon Ikpeazu would have had. Until that link was put up to the story in the Hull paper about us signing him last summer I didn't realise he was a first year U18. Looks a great prospect.

Although now Ugwu has gone and if Samuel is out injured long-term (assumed he'd be back next season) I wish Ikpeazu had stayed (though thought that last summer, most excited by him from all i'd read in the last couple of seasons than any U18 prospect we've had), he would have been the main man for the U21s next season. Could have been challenging for a first team place here in 2 or 3 seasons time.

Yep, he's two days younger than me, and I am not 22 either. Or past it!
Also, yep Cardwell may have more potential than Ugwu, but we need strikers oxf*rd now not in 2/3 years.

I wouldn't recognise Gozie Ugwu if he was in stood in front of me in the queue in KFC tbh.

Yep, we do, which is why I'm glad we're not planning on relying on Ugwu to be one of them.

Doesn't look like we're 'planning' at all at the moment, does it?

Not sure we can say that this early in the summer.

I'm sure there was some reasoning behind Ugwu's release, and given he'll have been demanding significantly less in terms of wages than the other strikers we have I'm not sure it was mostly based on cost cutting.

Could be completely off the mark mind..

Not been impressed with him this season.

He did well the season before but I think we have better players coming through than him. He's strong, quick and has a powerful shot but you need more. You need skill, technique and mental strength, which is something we have more with Cardwell, Tanner (technically plays just behind the striker) and Samuel (even though he's not been much better than Ugwu and injured).

Good luck to the lad though. He will forge a decent career in L1 and champ one day.

Well, Ugwu was behind ALF, Pog, HRK, Blackman and competing with Samuel for 5th choice at present, we might lose one or two strikers and sign one or two.... If we are thinking of predominately playing with one upfront (or not, even) next year and we have Samuel who has another year on his contract and is 20, going on 21 it's probably one or the other.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Samuel go on a free next year.

^ This

A lot of these youth players just blend into 1 - all show similar "great levels of prospect" but ultimately flatter to deceive before going on to tear it up for the likes of Cheltenham and Mansfield.

ftr both Samuel and Ugwu were born in April.
I'm not sure the phrases "going on 21" and "pushing 22" are entirely appropriate.

HRK and Blackman are not strikers. Samuel has done very little in 2 years.
Leaves us with 2 recognised seniotr strikers. One of which we've been actively trying to get rid of for a year, and the other is out of favour with the manager.
