Maguire
tulip Hard to see past a South American winner. Argentina have the easiest run to the quarter finals. So Argentina for me.
Brazil in the final too.

Has a host country ever gone out in the early rounds?

You have to go all the way back to 2010 to find an example of this.

That was the only time though wasn't it?

Spain in 82 had a disaster. Even N Ireland beat them.

Nasri out of the France squad. Personal fall out with the boss apparently.

Personally I think they will flop again.

On the spin side I am mildly optimistic about England's chances now

I see the traditional Dutch meltdown the French have been getting so good at the last few tournaments has begun before anyone's even turned up!

Can't see a European team winning it.
Brazil beat Germany in the final.
Spain & Argentina knocked out in the semi's. (not sure if this is possible haven't checked the groups and paths through.)

England to scrape through the group and lose to the first quality side they come up against as usual. If it weren't for the promising youngsters and Roy's good work I'd have written off our chances of getting out of the group completely.

Japan dark horses.

Top scorer Rooney.... only kidding, Messi.

Anyone else looking forward to seeing a deadly Argentinian front three of Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi and Franco Di Santo?

Looking at the Italian and Uruguayan squads I can't see England getting out of the group. I just can't see us beating either side with our youthful squad with the quality both sides have.

I'd forgotten about those damn horns :x Last world cup really wasn't very good although I spent 25 minutes watching all the goals from the tournament again last night and got incredibly excited about this one.

Not sure i buy into the it's in South America so only a South American team can win

- Only been hosted in SAm 6 times.
- The beaten finalist's in the last 4 hosted in SAm where European
- Brazil had a period of domination between '58 and '70 winning it 3 times out of 4. Two of those hosted in SAm. Is it a good team or location or a combination?
- Three of the finals where before we showed the rest of the world how to play football in '66  (not sure how competitive the earlier comp was compared to what it is now)

I think the whole travel and climate issues were a major issue up until the 1960s, 70s at a push. Also, there's a world of difference between the climates of Mexico and Chile/most of Argentina.

So I also reckon that the South American thing may have less effect than it did but then again, if you're playing kick'n'rush in the depths of the jungle, it ain't going to end well.
