RoyalBlue It was a great win and the good news is that I believe the Ladies team's funding is ring-fenced and secure. Far more grounds for optimism around the women's game, at club and country level, than the mens' at present!

That's not 'good news'.....if they are being funded by the main football club at this time that is absolutely ludicrous.

If only your optimism was shared by others. Crowds at these fourth-rate matches continue to be miniscule :!:

Grab your wife and run back to your cave now whilst the 21st Century continues to pass you by!

They are not fourth-rate matches but then we can't expect you to know as no doubt your blind prejudice has prevented you from attending to find out. As for crowds being miniscule, depends on how you define that. If the men's team goes down the plug hole due to the ownership cockup, you might find women's matches around the country are greater than those of Reading FC playing at tier x!

As for funding, I'm pretty sure it doesn't come from the main club, although the club does provide support in terms of facilities. In the past the funding has come from the Vice Presidents Club.

Haven't been to any Reading games but I watched the Women's World cup a few years ago, it wasn't exactly... riveting. Has it got much better?

Funnily enough, my wife-to-be is a keen football fan who has a season ticket to watch the team she has followed since she was about 8. She agrees that women's football is barely worth the disproportionate coverage that it seems to be getting these days. BBC in particular always seem keen to flog this particular dead horse, no surprises there as I am sure they'd bid for viewing rights of the Blind Ethnic Transgenderal Football League if it could push their own apologetic left wing agenda of inclusivity.

Women's football is about as interesting a product as women's cricket and men's netball tbh. But as long as the main football club isn't venturing this exercise in some act of politically correct vanity then crack on.

No. They still don't swap shirts at the end of the game!

My overriding memories of it were it being played at snail's pace, nobody seemed to be able to kick it very hard and shit keepers

It gets better with every tournament, unlike the men's game.

Give it another 20-30 years and it'll be as good as the men's game.

As with most sports, the women would never beat the men, but the skill and entertainment will be of equal standard.

Spot on. Those talking about poor standards, snail's pace and shit keepers are dinosaurs living in the past.

Much more entertainment and skill from the England Womens team than the men's at present. Walking the world cup qualifiers. Played 6, Won 6, Scored 33, Conceded 0. Yes, there are some poor teams in their group (but at least they are beating them easily, unlike their male counterparts) but there are also a couple of decent teams too.

And if you want to see a bit of pace & skill, watch this from 13 seconds in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDOrKPN01w4&list=UUnQpt1UxLq00NFULxTDHMww

I've been impressed with the development of the Womens game over just the last few years. Amazing what a bit of investment can do.

actually enjoyed watching the last couple of womens world cups on tv.
generally the game is slower paced, and the goalkeeping is generally poor, but the skill level seems high, and the games ive seen have been decent enough

The only thing I like about women's football is when they get injured. They don't roll around the floor like a big girl.

Andronikou is interested in taking over the running of this thread, but only if he can line his own pockets in doing so and do nothing to help it get out of it's mire long-term.
