mikey0406 whatever the situation holds, we are still a very lucrative club to buy, relatively new stadium, transport links to London, m4 corridor and if the ideas of new shopping centre/super casino are to be believed then that area in Reading could be rejuvenated. whoever buys the club knows they are buying the debt as I cannot believe that SJM/TSI are going to0 command any fee as the club is loosing money. would love to see someone come in, start a fresh, all major earners off the books over the next 2 seasons and invest in youth.

Nameless There is no way that a shopping centre would be built on the car park
The stadium is built on a rubbish tip, I'm no civil engineer but if you could get planning permission the cost of making the land capable of carrying a shopping centre would be huge.
The other obvious problem would be that no one would be able to use the shops on Saturdays.... And there would probably be no football or rugby for 2 or 3 years whilst the centre was built
If that is his business plan then he's not a genuine bidder.

More likely to be able to bring some expertise to the state of our walls at free-kicks anyway.
Marks & Spencer to take over from Waitrose as sponsors.

winchester_royal Having a large shopping centre nearby can only benefit the club tbh. Don't forget that with FFP we actually have to generate money to spend, rather than just have a sugar daddy hand over a load of cash, so a guy who has ambiotious revenue generating ideas would be preferable. Parking would need to be addressed, as well as the transport network, but I'm sure that would be taken into account.

To be fair, if they were able to build something the size of a football stadium, conference centre and hotel on that land, they can build a shopping complex as well. The practicality of it all is another matter though.

FFP doesn't work that way or you'd have the man City oil middle eastern refinery Ltd trading as man City football club.
Parking could easily be sorted. They could take the opportunity to clear the land by creating an underground car park. Decontaminates the land hides car park. Win-win
There is a cost of course but the Olympic site had over a 1m tonnes of ultra contaminated soil to remove so this is small fry
The logistics are also easily dealt with.
divide the site
Build a temporary car park by the roundabout.
Compete half the underground carpark
start above ground works
dismantle temp carpark
complete carpark
complete above ground works
Modern building methods. They also have the closed season to work with so for 3 months there is only the hotel to worry about. Careful planning will be all that's needed. If they can build the Shard in London without too much hassle this would be a doddle.

I suspect making the land safe and building on it at the same time would be very different to doing a massive build now. Putting foundations down would be hugely destructive wouldn't it ? I thought one of the reasons they put foundations for the expansioni in when the ground was first built was because they couldn't disturb the site later.

winchester_royal I wasn't suggesting we trade off the shopping centre
But having a large commercial hub located right next to the football club will do all sorts of good in terms of sponsorship, merchandise sales, and just attracting new supporters to the club in general.

leww_rfc Unfortunately I can't see it being a bidding war. I'd imagine one will pull out so I doubt it's going to be a case of us choosing our preferred choice.

They added the new wing of the hotel and media suite long after the original build so that isn't correct.

I fear that the logistics may be:-
1) Demolish stadium, hotel and training centre
2) build shopping centre, hotel etc
3) build new ground at Didcot whilst ground sharing with Oxford or Swindon in the meantime
4) rename us Thames Valley Royals

Mr.Swainey Has anyone thought that they might want to build on the Speedway car park, or do the club not own that?

They don't own it.
I also recall that an attempt to build a casino there failed because the council wouldn't grant any more licences, which raises questions over the 'super casino' plan. I think there are 3 casinos in Reading already, which seems like at least 2 too many
