Starting XI v Wigan

by moo » 12 Jul 2014 12:04

I'm surprised this hasn't been done yet, but seeing as Adkins has now advised he doubts there will be any signings before the season starts, it may be a time to predict how we might line up against one of our greatest bogey teams.

McCarthy
Gunter Pearce Morrison Obita
McCleary Hector Karacan Williams Robson-Kanu
Pog

Difficult to predict, as hopefully a couple of the younger guys will put themselves forward this pre-season in the way that Obita did in the last. Think we'll see:

McCarthy
Gunter
Pearce
Morrison
Obita
McCleary
Guthrie
Williams
HRK
Blackman
Pog

But would love to see Tanner really push on over the next couple of weeks and nick that no. 10 place from Nick.

-----------------------McCarthy*--------------------------
Gunter-------Morrison--------Pearce--------Obita
-----------------------Karacan----------------------------
----------------Guthrie------Williams-------------------
McCleary*--------------------------------------------HRK
--------------------------Pog-------------------------------

Bench: Feds, Kelly, Hector, Akpan, Taylor, Blackman, Tanner

*Assuming McCarthy and McCleary stay. If not, Blackman and Feds bumped up, with Anderson and Tshibola on the bench.

Blackman's last chance to impress, Akpan's career with us over unless we have another injury crisis.

McCarthy can't play out from the back and neither can Morrison. Another frustrating season if we persist with these two & Adkins wants us to play out.

God our team is so poor. This takeover needs to be completed asap, so we can get a few key additions in.

It's not though, is it? On paper, when everyone's fit, we've still got one of the best starting 11s in the league.

Finishing 7th and challenging for play off is poor? Blimey!

We have two premiership players in McCleary and McCarthy and tbh think they will both leave by the beginning of the season anyway. Other than that if you think we have one of the best teams in the league you are deluded. Look at Cardiff, Norwich, Fulham, Wigan, Blackburn, Bournemouth, even Watford have a much much stronger side than us. Left over spirit from the McDermott era helped us to finish 7th last season, and without that now this team is no way near premiership quality.

Having said that with a few key additions that Adkins himself buys, I do think we can make a push for the promotion.

That line-up cheers me slightly as it is certainly a top 10 line-up for this division. Whether all of those are still at the club by September 1st remains to be seen.

If everyone is fit, I think that's probably our strongest XI, assuming Drenthe is the only further departure (and hopefully Akpan and Blackman...). Maybe Taylor in for one of the midfielders to link play.

Subs: Feds/Andersen/Lincoln, Hector, Kelly/Cummings, Tshibola, Stacey, Taylor, Samuel/new striker

Teams may not always finish a 38 / 46 game season in the position they deserve, but they damn sure finish within a place or two of it.

I think Guthrie, Obita, McCarthy and McCleary would be mad to stay if we don't bring anyone star-like in.
I'd hope we get rid of POG because he's quite shite.
I honestly think that we'll take a chance on the youth with the prime objective of sitting just above the relegation zone with a long term goal of rebuilding, when funds have settled, for the following season.
