paddy20 After this whole painful saga of the takeover we now seem to be in a total anti climax situation based on the sort of players we are looking to sign. Two Notts F cast offs and a CH who has to try and re-prove himself. Cant see us going for Murray as he is too similar to the Pog and Palace would want around £4m for a 31 year old still recovering from injury. I know its early days but there doesn't seem to be much ambition at the moment. Are they signing these players to help keep us in the champ. and hoping the under 21's will come good in 2/3 years? I think we will just have to hope we are good enough this year to avoid a downward spiral.
I can't help but feel you're being a little short sighted here.
We're never going to be going out and spending £5m on a young promising player that will get everyone excited. Why? Because we have a fantastic academy that contains a number of prospects just as exciting as those going for big money.
What we need is experienced pros with a solid attitude that will come in and contribute straight away. We have a very young, talented squad that needs a bit of guidance over the next couple of years. Players like Mackie, Cox, and Hammond will provide that. They've also all proven themselves to be very adept players at this level. They're also well known to Adkins and his team so we know what we're going to get. Rather that than another Drenthe fiasco.
Forest can go out and spunk £5m on players like Assombalonga as much as they want. It's ridiculous money and we're quite rightly not getting involved in that market.
I imagine more of these types of signings over the years, as we look to bring through academy players and supplement with experienced pros willing to lend their expertise. It's the right way to go.
LOL at 'ambition' btw. If we'd signed Mackie at this time last year everyone would be cock-a-hoop. He's had an average season for Forest but this was a guy who shone for QPR in the prem. Cox scored 6 more goals in his last season in L1 than Britt did last season. Hammond played a decent role in a Leicester side that steamrolled the Championship last season. And Ferdinand was a £8m player not long ago. These are good players who are at a good age and are decent value. This is the very definition of the Reading way. Long may it continue.
