Royal Ginger Cox had fantastic ball control but was always too far away from Pogrebnyak to make much of a difference. That invisible line connecting them will come soon. Edwards was noticeably more in tune with Pog when he came on, which is to be expected as they've had a pre-season together, but he suffered from the way the game was going.

Obita started quietly but grew into the game.

Akpan was barely passable but needs to keep his arms down. Every time he jumped his arms went up.

Blackman was poor in the air but broke well when he got it to his feet.

Man of the match for me was Jay Tabb. Everything good that Ipswich did came through him, and he got a good ovation when he went off.

Really I thought Blackman won his fair share of headers in the first half, flicking them on down the right hand touchline, was just no one getting on the end of them most of the time.

That's poor in the air to me. Why flick it down the channel if no-one's there? Pog was always hanging off his inside shoulder. I really didn't think he got up to many anyway.

Ok so the ball is played up to him in the air and he is supposed to just let it go over his head? Or let the defender cut it out? If your suggesting he should of been flicking it to the inside then I accept the point but maybe he was trying to and the ball in the air wasn't good enough? Or he may have been told to flick to the channels and others were not where they were supposed to be? Just saying sometimes a players seemingly bad play is not what it looks like at face value.

Flicking to the inside, turning and trying to run onto it, dropping it back to midfield. Any option would do. Just seemed to be the same result almost every time it went up to him with very little variation in what was attempted.

Partly Feds fault and partly Adkins for having it constantly pumped up that way of course.

Me too. I saw him win quite a lot. As shown by Whoscored.com's 62% Aerials Won for him.

That assumes the ball is reaching him in a way where he can choose where to send it. That's simply not the case a lot of time for him. He did knock them down the line to no one a fair few times, but that caused a fair few problems for Ipswich in of itself.

Well, if the stats prove me wrong then fair enough. Perhaps he had a bad patch where it went wrong a few times together before he sorted it out, I just remember getting a bit frustrated with it at one point.

Don't trust those stats, says cooper didn't win any aerials when that is all he did when he came on and attributes Cummings header off the line to obita.

Haven't read through 5 pages but what I saw today was a bunch of kids in Blue and White Hoops playing with a load of passion and I loved it. Hecktor and Edwards stood out for me, they'd get 110/10 and everyone else would get 9.999/10

Royal Ginger Well, if the stats prove me wrong then fair enough. Perhaps he had a bad patch where it went wrong a few times together before he sorted it out, I just remember getting a bit frustrated with it at one point.

The frustration wasn't so much Blackman as such, but federici keep pumping the ball long to the same place every time. Their left back was a big lad, strong, physical and decent in the air and so it was always going to be difficult for Blackman to win quality headers

Their full back also had his hands all over him the entire first half.

Hampshire Royal Doesn't look like anyone's responded to your posts, Victor, so I'll chip in. Thanks for your contributions, Victor.

Thank you stalker.
Did you enjoy the absorbing game?

You know I can't stalk you anymore Victor. Bloody restraining orders!!

Also you know that it's difficult for me to get to games, so I didn't go. That's why I don't feel I can comment on it. Except to say that we got a win against a good Championship side with 13(?) players who came through the Academy in the squad of 18. More than happy.

Obvious man marking role I thought. McCarthy did his homework and told Mings to stick to him like a limpet.

I don't get all of the negativity. I mean we fielded a very young team against a very experienced top half side in this league...and won! We kept a clean sheet, we had 2 academy youngsters make their debuts and from the sounds of it everyone left everything they had on the pitch today. Was is it because it didn't remind people of Barcelona?

Everybody reacts differently to the same event. So if people are disappointed in what they saw today, that we got 3 points and kept a clean sheet today I won't argue with them, but...........

Simon's Church
yappy
Simon's Church Thought hector was pretty poor today tbh kept trying to nick the ball in front of mcgoldrick and murphy and leaving us a bit exposed, ill give him the benefit of the doubt though as its his first game at cb for a while and the midfield offered very little protection today.

Sorry SC but that is one of the most ridiculous comments I've seen on this board. Hector was outstanding today.

You cant have read many posts then. :?

He was bailed out by gunter twice in the first half after getting caught out of position and again by cummings in the second half. I can understand fans getting carried away by a defender who can vaguely pass the ball but im blown away anyone thinks it was a performance worthy of its own thread.

Blown away.

tbf I have Hector down as MoM, but on the basis of an outstanding second half - in the first half he was a bit shaky, but grew into the game

Edwards? Running around like a headless chicken is not really worthy of 110/10, in my very humble opinion

Rating:
Feds - 7, good distribution, and looked pretty solid
Gunter -7, much improved crossing, now zips them in rather than floats them
Hector - 8, MotM
Pearce - 7, very solid
Cummings - 7, very solid

Blackman -6, got frustrated today, but I think he is finally turning into a good player for us
Akpan - 4,as per everyone who watched the same game as me
Obita - 6, ok - i know he prefers centre midfield, but he proved last season he's a left back
Taylor - 7, ok, but +1 for the goal

Cox - 7, great movement off the ball, and makes us look dangerous going forward - as someone else said, the missing link.
Pog - 7, led the line well

when we get our midfield back we might be quite good

Subs were all good. Putting Edwards on for the last 15 minutes is tactical genius, he's going to win a fair few points for us from the bench alone.

The Real Sandhurst Royal Result aside....What a day for Reading Football Club and the youth academy set up we have in place.

A bench of academy products - Stacey, Tshbola, Cooper, Kuhl, Edwards, Tanner and McCarthy.

A day to be be proud of!!

+10000000

I was bursting with pride today and the result and gritty performance was just the icing on the cake.

Not the game we were watching. I took interest in that aspect of Pog's game, and I don't believe he won a single challenge.

I'm very proud of such an inexperienced side. If we're getting results now and still have 5 experienced first teamers to come back then we'll be alright this season. Optimistic about Reading for the first time in a while.
