Obita being played out of position

by Mightyprawns » 18 Aug 2014 17:49

hi guys does anybody else believe Obita is being played out of position? Adkins feels the need to play Taylor on the LW instead of Obita and I think its madness. can anybody tell me the logic in putting a skillfull winger with pace in CM?

Am new to this page so if I was meant to pose this somewhere else instead of starting a new thread then I am sorry lol still getting used to it cheers all

I am convinced Obita is now a left back. Possibly a future England left back!

Maybe Adkins thinks its the best mix for the short term...

Clearly Adkins is having to make do with what he has. He thinks his best combination is Obita plus one, and he's got 2 wins and a draw that way ?

I'd agree that Obita looks a class player at left back and will go much further if he plays there than if he returns to the wing, and I don't see him as a long term central midfielder.

I don't think it's anything to get too fussed about, it's certainly not madness, it's something we've been rather forced in to by the injuries.

I agree with your point but why not swap Obita to LM and Taylor to CM?

Because then our centre mid will be even worse.

I'm guessing that Adkins knows the players well, and has decided that he wants them that way round. I would tend to agree it would be a weaker set up. Obita is now a reasonably experienced player and clearly is confident in his game. Taylor is still very new and I suspect a combination of him and Akpan would just be lacking a bit of something. Obita is not ideal, but he's a better bet than Taylor. You need to get your core as strong as possible and to weaken that in order to imprive your wing just makes no sense. Obita would probably never see the ball !

It's pretty clear that Obita has decent defensive qualities, given he won PotS at left back. Taylor is rather more of an attacking player. So Adkins clearly thinks he's better off playing Taylor out of position on the left and Obita in the centre (where he's played several times last season as well).

Give our total lack of midfield options and our dodgy defence last season, Adkins wants to give us the most solid base he can and that includes the less light weight Obita in central midfield over Taylor.

That's be my best guess anyway.

I think Obita has also said previously that central midfield is his preferred position?

Be that as it may, I think he's definitely more effective for us as a left-back - particularly as we don't have another natural left-back amongst our core first team really, though Cummings seems to have started well enough in fairness. If we don't bring in a new left back I think Obita will go back to left-back quickly enough with a few promising players breaking through in the central midfield area and Karacan/Guthrie/Williams all to return from injury.

I was about to say exactly this on Saturday then Taylor popped up on the left and scored the winner. This is why we aren't the manager!

I guess Adkins wants Obita's pace to shore up defensively, as Taylor isn't the quickest. Taylor is the best passer in the current xi so linked up with Cox well from his advanced position, especially in the first half.

As mentioned above, Obita was asked by Tim dellor if he saw a future at left back or if he preferred left wing and he did indeed say he wanted to play CM!

I'm sure Adam Federici would love to play up front too give the choice, but it's down to the manager to determine if and where players play.
