As regards the experience of our team - Adi Williams pointed out that 5 of the starting 11 have international caps! Cummings and Obita both have a reasonable level of experience at this level now and I wouldn't call Blackman inexperienced.

On a different subject - did Attwell book Gunter in stoppage time or not? He definitely appeared to flash the yellow card in his direction but neither the BBC or HobNob have recorded a booking in their reports of the game.

It's 6. But when they're for such great footballing nations as Jamaica, Wales and Ireland (twice), I don't think that is saying too much.

I think he booked a Huddersfield player and Gunter just happened to be closer when the card came out.

Aren't the rules whoever sees the card first has to take it?

Think you're confusing this with "he who smelt it dealt it".

Snowball I hope Khul gets a run of at least six games before the others are fit enough
to replace him. I think, barring serious injury, he'll play at the top end of the Prem.

Quality player

If things go well for him I think you could well be right.

He's a cracking young player and his debut showed a glimpse of his promise. Hopefully Adkins handles him as well as some of the other youngsters he's brought through to help him make the most of that talent.

I thought Gunter was the one booked for arguing with Attwell over how much time wasting Huddersfield were doing.

Gunter was definately booked. Attwell took an age to walk over, flash the card at the goalkeeper, walk back all the while writing in his book. Gunter then gets the card and he makes a quick note in his book. Then he stops the goal kick being taken to allow a Huddersfield sub on

Thanks for clarifying that. I actually thought at the time that their keeper was one of those least deserving the booking for timewasting! I wonder what Gunter said to get his yellow 'about time too you pratt'?, 'you've wasted more time that they have'?

Keepers are always the worst culprits for the imaginary offence of time wasting, and like the Huddersfield keeper, they get away with it far too often.
I actually don't think it should be a booking, as any half decent ref ensures no time is actually wasted. I'd change the rule to allow the ref to add on the time by which the restart is delayed plus 30 seconds. I'd also stop substitutions being made during added time.

As a supporter of the GKU, I beg to differ with you on that one. Yes, they have plenty of good opportunities to waste time, probably more than outfield players, but that doesn't automatically make them the worst offenders and I don't think the Huddersfield keeper was.

Adding time doesn't tackle the problem because too many refs, like Attwell, don't add the full amount. Timewasting is also very frustrating for at least one section of the paying public. Furthermore, it isn't only about running the clock down, it's also about trying to disrupt the flow of an opponent's play.

Whilst punishing offenders by adding an additional 30 seconds sounds good in theory, it won't work in practice because refs just won't do it enough of the time.

Yellow cards dished out when the timewasting first starts always seem to be a pretty effective way of focusing player's minds and changing their behaviours. So book them and add back the time that was wasted.

Personally, when it comes to monitoring time played, I like the approach I have seen in some games in the US: There is an official timekeeper on the sidelines. The scoreboard clock is set to count down but is stopped whenever the ref indicates that it should be e.g. when a player's injury is being assessed (other than in serious cases, injuries aren't meant to be treated on the field of play but most refs seem to have forgotten that!). Clock is restarted when the ref blows his whistle for resumption of play.

Under that system, everyone on the pitch and in the stadium knows exactly how long is left to be played and klaxon goes as the clock hits zero - so what if the ball is coming over from a corner, the full 45 mins has been played and everyone knows that!

I hate to say it but I think our US friends have got something right there! Probably far too practical and sensible for the idiots who ru(i)n our game though!

Great debut, and from the snippets I've seen as a youth, a rap talent, a leader, good football brain.

Of course he will go to a big club, but that's OK, as long as we get 1-2 seasons from him and some VG money

and a sell on clause.

I fear the big teams will not only snap up our best players but also or academy team who did such a good job finding and developing them and that will be a bigger loss.

Just like McCarthy two years ago and Obita last year. I can't understand why we can't keep these cracking young players.

McCarthy is going this month. Obita has played one (successful) full season and if he performs well in the first half of this season he too will be gone soon enough.
