bobby1413 Were there really that many players who went down? It doesn't really stick out in my mind as being a game like that.

There was a period in the first twenty minutes when every time Derby lost the ball one of their players would lie on the floor. Once I noticed that happening, I watched out for it, and it continued for the whole game. They are a nasty cynical side, and they will get caught out by it soon. A better ref would have let us play on a few times while their cheats acted out their feigned injuries and kept our attackers onside.

Having said that, they looked a good side, very well-organised in defence, neat in attack and with a gem in Hughes. They deserved the hard-fought 1-0 win they should have got if we hadn't given them two free goals in the first half.

I like Hector, Gunter or Pearce but they are completely isolated at times. Our defensive problems are not one of personnel, just of numbers. If you play a conventional 442, you have four defenders and at least one defensive midfielder, alongside two wingers who know their defensive duties - up to seven players contributing to keeping goals out. On Saturday, we had three defenders and Obita sharing defensive duties with also having to be a left winger. Norwood and Taylor were attacking midfielders, Mackie was on the right wing with no defensive responsibilities and Robson-Kanu played in the hole behind Cox and Murray: six players without any defensive responsibility. The passing is good at the moment, but you can understand why we are getting stuffed.

We huffed an puffed for 90 minutes plus with the cream always coming to the top which in this case was Derby (potential champions).

Team selection again baffling for the 2nd game on the trot. Taylor in central midfield.... Has he played there this season and was he even on the pitch!!!

HRK put the best cross in of the game after 5 minutes for Cox to head over. No more left sided wing play for the duration of the game with HRK not used at all,. NA set us up to play one right sided football Kick it to Mackie who then just puts his head down and runs at opposition with no end product.

We continue to comment on the the poor defending. The back four have been to blame for a number of issues this season but we have no midfield protection. We need Karacan or Williams back quickly to do this role and to go box to box.

Me neither. Certainly no more than we do, particularly when we're playing away and those rare occassions these days when we're in front.

I've said it before but that won't stop me saying it again: the reason our full backs are looking so poor is because we play far too narrow. The wingers are always cutting inside so they don't provide an outlet when we have the ball and aren't in position to provide the defenders with any cover when we don't. That doesn't excuse the piss-poor play by our central defenders though. The first goal came from a quite poorly hit corner - the ball was hit with no pace on it at all and should've been pretty easy to clear and was a carbon copy of the ball played in just moments before so they can't say they weren't warned. And that's without even mentioning that the ball passed between Hal's legs.

I agree with the poster above - I thought Derby were about as cynical as you can get without starting to pick up loads of bookings. Not knocking them for it, you can't really get out of this league otherwise.

Two things stuck out for me on Saturday - firstly how much Glenn Murray puts himself about - the poster a few pages ago who likened him to Jason Roberts for backing in and winning a foul, he doesn't do that at all. He competes for everything in the air and otherwise, on Saturday he was getting smashed from behind on every header so quite rightly started to stand till and let the Derby player go over the top. I also found myself warming to him immensely when he quite rightly gave Gunter a roasting for getting nowhere near his man when Murray was harassing and closing them down on his own. Hope he signs in Jan.

Secondly, I had to laugh at the clueless tw@t behind me in Y24 who kept bellowing things at Chris Martin ("Coldplay aren't famous anymore lolz" etc), when he blurted out "you're a fúcking carthorse Martin!" literally about 5 seconds before he received the ball, beat two of our players and dinked it over Fedders. Class.

Oh and "Worst Team In History" being sung back at Y25 when they were three up - rofl.

No matter how poor Adkins' performance has been at the club, .

Yeah. we've worked out they don't matter to you.

RoyalBlue , Madejski's cock ups and poor performance over the same period (+ 6 months) have been far, far worse.

Does that include hiring NA?

RoyalBlue ,At this moment in time, I suspect Madejski may be closer to the exit than Adkins.

LOL. Exit from what?

Do keep up. Madejski didn`t hire NA.

That's the point.
If SJM doesn't have the influence to hire a manager then why should he have the influence for his "cock-ups and poor performance" to hinder the team. RB seems to be confused as to who is in charge. SJM has no influence at the moment, and under AZ he was the co-owner without the controlling share. I certainly wouldn't put money into the club if my co-owner owed me a considerable amount of money. Would you?

If RB is talking about SJM selling to AZ in the first place, then I agree; but I fail to see what else he is really responsible for. And, boy, has SJM paid for his mistake, but we're lucky to have him around to broker the deals to extricate AZ from the club.

As for SJM hamstringing the club prior to AZ, I should remind you that the last four managers hired by SJM all went on to manage in the premiership, two of them with Reading - so maybe we should have had his input in who to hire after McDermott, although we all know he wouldn't have sacked Brian anyway. The only two failures under SJMs regime were Burns, who did exactly what RB wanted him to do - but OVERspent (Ironic for RB). And Mick/Jim - a season Im willing to write off because we got a nice shiny stadium out of it. SJM had absolutely nothing to do with the failure of Bullivant.

But the original question is was "Is NA doing good enough" - and although I would agree that he's worked almost exclusively under an ownerless club during he's tenure - he was signed in the Premiership under Premiership wages; and we've got to expect a lot more from him as a consequence. He's already had two full closed seasons and I'm struggling to name one good thing he's done.

Nasty and cynical? Wow, I've never seen any other set of fans describe us as that!

My honest opinion is this - at home games, we often get on at Chris Martin for throwing himself to the floor quite easily. To balance that out though, he gets a battering off most centre halves, with little protection off referees. Apart from that, I don't think we have any that are "nasty and cynical". We do, however, have a few lightweights!! There is also the counter-argument that teams commit a lot of niggly fouls on us as we have good ball-players and can out-football most sides. How many times, for example, does Will Hughes run past someone and have his shirt pulled?

I'm not sure anyone watching us regularly would follow that argument.

I thought Taylor had a good game, and the tactical analysis on Tilehurst end backs that feeling up.

But he was one of the few.

Defensively we are so poor because we have no defensive organisation IMO.

Yep, Taylor did little wrong imo, and worked hard.
People on here call him anonymous even when he's scored the only goal of the game so you have to wonder what he'd have to do to get good reviews from some.

His role was clearly as the secondary CM, keep moves flowing but let Norwood put in the killer balls. It's not Taylor's fault that Norwood was completely off the boil; he did his job.

Well I was at the game and I didn't for one second think Derby were "nasty and cynical". They've got some good footballers in that side although I thought the final scoreline was a bit harsh on Reading.

Hector, I have no idea what he was doing for the third goal, could easily have gone on and tackled Martin but just seemed to stand there expecting something else to happen.

Otherwise all a bit depressing - if we don't score we get beat these days.

NA is a great tactician and will get us out of this mess. He has the man management skills to get the best out if the
Players. Remember NA is on an cast iron contract and if we sacked him it would probably put us back in debt.

So forget about getting rid of him.

I can't be bothered to read the whole thread. What I have read is the usual mix. I thought we played well, didn't take our chances and commited suicide at the back against a top chump team.

I think snowball makes a good point about hector and our defence / midfield problems. Move him into mid whilst williams / karacan / akpan are out and put cooper / a loanee in. Weakens defence but stiffens midfield and I think our main defensive problems are midfield and two lightweight fullbacks.

Hector in the midfield we have been there and done that in case you forgot, you do come out with some ludicrous points, same full backs that finished 7th last season oh yes but then we had Morro and half decent keeper oh yes and most of the season we had wide men that could shift Mcanuff and Gmac so that throws your game plan straight in the bin. M8 no good arguing you know I am right.

Come now Joe, play nice, you can't fault him for wanting something done differently, or should we continue to let 3 in per game for the rest of the season?
