So is Nick Hammond just really crap at his job or is he trying to sign loan players whilst he has both hands firmly tied behind his back by the Chairman/Owners?

Meoci71 Garath McAuley not getting a look in at WBA with the form of Lescott and Dawson, surely worth an attempt to get him in at cb until jan on loan.

That's a pretty good shout. Experienced defender and, from what I remember, half decent on the ball and had a reasonable season last year for West Brom. Centre back is our weakest position at the moment, and one that we haven't got strong players to come back into, unlike midfield and out wide.

Another player who might be a good short term stop-gap is Ryan Taylor. He's just come back from an injury nightmare (so he'd fit in well!) but if he's capable of getting back to fitness he'd add a combative option in midfield, a more defensive option on the right of midfield or competition for Gunter without Kelly and Cummings. He's also deadly on the free kicks, something we seem to be missing.

I'm sure there are more suitbable defensive midfield options out there, I just can't think of any and it must be a priority.

I'd also like us to see us get a left back in for the short term as well. This is less of a priority as Obita has the potential to be sound here but we've no cover and no competition. Luke Garbutt at Everton looks pretty decent and a loan to the Championship might be just what he needs for his development.

We need something to just shake things up and try and give Adkins some scope to change the team. Hopefully they're working on something or the run up to January is going to be a struggle.

McAuley is a great shout, although presumably WBA need him as cover.

out! couldn't cope with a gareth mcauley and a mccleary in the same team, would get them mixed up on the pitch aswell,as their names would look the same on the backs of their shirts.

Didn't we once have a central defender in our Youth Team called Simon Cox? Pretty sure he signed a contract with the club shortly after we sold Simon Cox the striker.

Also we have the whole situation of Shane Long constantly having his name spelled incorrectly as Shaun while he was at Reading, and now we actually have a Sean Long.

The trialist is Jure Travner. Slovenian defender. No indications he will sign. Is one of several trialists #readingfc have looked at.

So is Nick Hammond just really crap at his job or is he trying to sign loan players whilst he has both hands firmly tied behind his back by the Chairman/Owners?

Option C - it's hard to get good players on short term loans?

I would suggest that the likes of Bertrand, Griffin, Zurab, Legs, Baird, Sharp and Murray testify to Hammond's ability at securing loans (and frees). I would also suggest that he wouldn't even be bothering if there was no possibility. It's probably just a case of finding a more experienced player who is prepared to swallow his pride and a club who are prepared to let him go.

Do you really think option C applies? You rightly quote Murray as a success and he is a good player so you can get players on loan (surely we aren't just looking for them on a short term basis), if the money is made available. I really do not accept the argument that there aren't the players out there if the club is prepared to pay the (loan) market rate for them. After all, they don't exactly have to be top Premiership stars to be an improvement on some of the players currently guaranteed a starting place because we have no other options.

It's same old Reading, we can't get players better than those we already have for the money the chairman and owners are prepared to pay. Pay peanuts, get monkeys and, at the moment, it looks like even the monkeys may be turning their noses up at the diet on offer!

In the emergency loan window, short term loans are all that are going.

So far we've had two sensible suggestions for loanees, one of whom is quite probably still wanted by his club (McAuley) and one who has just come back from a long injury (Taylor). Can you add any to that?

Are other clubs beating us to the types of player that we need? That's how you'd show that we might not be offering enough, not saying "we haven't got anyone in so we must be stingy" - there are many reasons why we might not have been able to get anyone in, the most likely of which is that there's no one available.

It's funny how no manager who's left has ever had a bad word to say about Hammond, despite his complete incompetence when it comes to providing good players.

It's funnier how Hammond gets so much flack when we are doing badly, but not much when we are doing well.

Once again we have a budget, there is no spare cash lying around.

refuses to pay more than a player is worth

Would say Hammond has done really well since the Thai's come in, the players we brought in over the summer are all good additions on a tight budget.

Depends how he is measuring 'worth' though, doesn't it? I mean, a half-million quid defender might be worth a million to us right now.

Tbh I don't see how we can either criticise him or defend him, seeing as we know fuk all about what players he has seen, what they are worth and what he thinks they are worth. I guess it's just frustrating not to see anyone coming in when we really could do with help at the back.

Dunno. I tend to wait for other people to suggest names who might be available, look them up on Wikipedia, then say "yeah, mega - they are well ace" or "shut up, he's fuking shit m8" depending on what I read.
