Sean St Ledger - Unfounded Rumor

by bracksroyal10 » 26 Nov 2014 15:18

I know he hasn't played since summer although he has been training with Ipswich which would hopefully mean its not as much of an Anton Ferdinand scenario all over again.

Not too sure what he is like now but he has certainly always been a decent defender for any side in the Championship and considering he is free, might be a worthwhile signing to bolster our defence particularly in the central area and give us that depth as well as experience that we are lacking. He was a part of the Leicester side that won promotion last year and was regularly featuring for ROI at one stage.

Surely no harm in giving him the chance to train with us and see what he is like.

Agree, I'd take him at the moment.

Fancy that, he's signed for a club showing a little bit of ambition to provide good cover for an already quite useful squad. Meanwhile we're quite happy to do naff all in an attempt to strengthen and provide cover for the desperate defensive position we find ourselves in.

Nigel knows best....

Maybe Nigel doesn't have a choice?

Very true, even SB said on his Facebook that about 1.5 million was available to spend whether it's loans etc.

Think he actually said that we only had £1.5M to spend, which a number of posters thought had been swallowed up by Norwood and Cox.

Whatever your opinion of NA (I will say I'm still slightly in his favour/ hedging towards the fence), I cannot believe that any manager would sit on their hands doing nothing with the way our defence has been, if there was an option to bring extra bodies in.

Don't hear of many decent players queuing up to play for us. Maybe they think they are not good enough to play for NA.

I'd suggest we're still hampered by players on high wages they don't deserve and aren't really sustainable in the Championship; Pog, Drenthe, Guthrie and HRK specifically. With Guthrie and Drenthe's contracts being up this summer we can start getting back to normal, with HRK and Pog to follow the next summer.

Think that is a hugely important point. This ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23923904 ) BBC sport article from 2013 gives average championship salaries as around 4-5k, with 8-9k for top players at that level. If Pog is on anything close to the reported 30k then we could have 3 really good players in his place. You can't help but think Guthrie, HRK and Drenthe are on at least good championship player money too. Quite sure NA would love to be able to use that sort of money for positions we actually need. As it is bumper contracts for players that don't make our first eleven is continually hamstringing us.

That being said, you would hope Sheff Wed are at least paying some part of Drenthes ages at present.

Surely it's got a lot more to do with the board providing the tools to get the players we need, and not the manager choosing not to strengthen his squad - which he is bound to want to do!

Well he said himself after the game Saturday in relation to Cooper that he wanted to keep a pathway to the first team for the Academy players rather than use short term loans.

Of course whether he actually has any choice in teh matter is another matter.
