102 coaching staff??

by paddy20 » 10 Dec 2014 08:50

With the latest set of figures showing a massive loss for 2014 how on earth do we have 475 staff members and over 100 coaching staff?

Admittedly I guess a lot of those may be part time and include stewards etc but to have over 100 on the coaching team looks pretty high. 53 paid players also looks a lot. Cant really understand how we could lose so much money compared to last year as wages for players should not have changed much. I know re-positioning the debt has a big effect but does that mean the Thais have now wiped out our entire debt? The figure being banded about was £25M not £63m when they bought.

Not seen the figures you're talking about but assuming they're covering the season 13-14 then why would you think we wouldn't lose considerably more given the loss of premiership TV money we'd have had the season before?

Agree about the coaching staff although I'm guessing most of that is a direct result of CAT A Academy directives.

Difficult to answer without knowing what set of figures we're talking about though.

I would think the number of coaching staff include all those at youth level as well. If you've ever been to Goals on a Wednesday evening you'll see most pitches taken up by Reading academy from something like U6 - U13. There's probably 30-40 Reading coaches there. No doubt most of them are part time.

Half the coaches are voice / media coaches for the new owners and a motivational coach for SJM.

I'm struggling to get to 102 too. We only need 18 full time staff under EPPP plus enough to meet our contact time obligations, which I think would be closer to 40 part-time staff (worth noting that I am a total know-nothing).

53 players is a lot. Remember that most of our U18s last season signed contracts on their birthdays. We currently have about 38 players with squad numbers and about ten more who don't (Drenthe and half the U21 squad) so we could easily pass that figure as our U18s sign fully professional deals.

Iirc we lost £2m in the prem, compared to a profit of about £5m the previous time. Given we lost about £12m the previous champ season, I'd be amazed if we lost less than £5m last season and i wouldn't be surprised if it was as much as £10m.

I think we need to be within £8m for last season's FFP regulations and the club seem to think we're just about ok for that. So if that is the case then I'm guessing 7-8m will be the official loss for last season.

I think some of the opinion in this thread has been pulled from this article, not seen it posted anywhere else on the forum today:

No wonder it's been such a struggle to sell the club.

Number of coaches is perhaps a misleading stat, assuming all are paid staff they won't all be on good money and some may be part-time, I say they hire 4 more so we can adapt the 106 chant......106, 106, we've more coaches, 106.

Reading FC Holdings no longer hold any shares in Reading FC, having sold them to the new owners.

To have produced such a sh*t team from what should be a decent squad at this level, we must have scoured the planet in search of the worst 100 coaches we could get our hands on.

Come to think of it, why do anything else when they are being hired to work with the manager from hell :|

Love to.see.who WR thinks are really decent in this squad. The only ones seem to be feds, some of the summer signings, and lots of promise from a good few of the young lads. It seems to be the well paid that are letting the fans down.

We run squads at 13 age groups, plus the pro squads, plus the Ladies. I believe at the younger age groups you have elite squads and also School of Excellence squads. There's also the Community coaches although not sure if technically they are RFC employees or still PFA funded. I don't think 102 is such a big number. For that much football !
I suspect 102 is also the number employed during the year, rather than the number all at one time.
Only a tiny number would have had any involvement with the first team.
400+ staff would mostly be match day, and there is a pretty high turnover between seasons so that number seems reasonable. There are easily 120 stewards, response team, customer service, ticket office, megastore and car park staff on any match day.
