melonhead Worried SJM may believe a return for macdermott is what we want though
Would be a backward step for me

Interesting comment, seeing as you were one of the ones crying at McDermott's IMO deserved sacking.

I'll explain.
I didn't think it was right to Sack macdermott back when we did.
I don't think it would be right to bring him back now that it's now.

His sacking was undeserved and today's news actually reinforces that.

It really does amaze me how people like yourself were so quick to defend Adkins citing ownership issues and the like yet McDermott is accused of lying about transfer budgets and interference from above when he referenced the Zingarevich era. Admit it, you and your ilk chased after the oft quoted myth of "more attractive football" and it was just a pipedream lie dreamt up by a young owner whose real reason was he got desperate and panicked in the hope of keeping the glitz, glamour, prestige, spotlight and most of all money of the PL.

brighton_royal Can we all just take the positives and move on?

Think you're getting mixed up.

McDermott's catchphrase in the PL season was infact "we move on" if I remember rightly.

Not that mixed up pal, just seen Adkins post match interview from Saturday replayed on SSN less than 10 minutes ago saying that "The scoreline is a poor result for us but we'll reflect upon that and move on".

Fair enough.

"We move on" was still McD's catchphrase though.

Yeah I did think the football would improve under Adkins. The evidence we had at the time suggested it would. I don't mind admitting I was wrong about that, but having said that I don't think he is a bad manager and he could go somewhere else and do well. I think the quality of the players he had at Southampton was a main difference though. He inherited a shit state of affairs here and had to put up with them since after being shafted by the owner. Whatever the other reasons, the bottom line is it just didnt work for him here.

To be fair we did see the basic football improve in terms of possession etc, but we were still just as clueless as what to do with it as we were under McDermott in the Premier League. IMO it's hard to say how much is down to the manager and how much is down to the players. Adkins just didnt see to be able to train them out of their bad habits and improve them. I think half the problem is that a lot of the players are just limited.

I did think for a while that the one positive to come from AZ's ownership was Adkins, but a couple on here predicted that his (AZ's) reign could end in tears and I agreed that it could well do.

McDermott's sacking WAS justified though. He lost his way in the PL, ran out of ideas and made some poor decisions. Kept playing the same out of form players week in week out and spent his post match interviews moaning about 50/50 decisions rather than addressing the fact we'd underperformed and been outplayed in nearly every game. We wernt seeing any improvement, in fact we were getting worse. If you think Adkins sacking was deserved for those two reasons at least, then so was McDermott's.

I've found it hard to catch many games in the last couple of years so it's disappointing to read reports of the fabled passing style not working. However how much of an improvement has it been since McD? Because IMO even when we were winning in the championship the passing and ball control was cringe-worthy at best, and I was hoping that Adkins could improve upon that.

Also what would we like/expect to see from the new gaffer (whoever it turns out to be), a continuation on a more fluid passing style? back to basics with a better defense? more youth? less youth? I really have no idea what to expect.

Chris Hughton was in attendance at the Birmingham game on Saturday, probably co-incidence but....

seanboyd_2 Get off your high horse!.

Also when did Adkins do this " One thing is for sure, however much money he's given he will spend every penny of it, increasing the club's debts by millions so we'd better hope he lives up to the hype."

Twat

Rattlelold :D

Who knows how much money Adkins had to spend? What we do know is that he signed Norwood for £1m+ and Cox for £600k and we haven't improved, even though they are good players. We also know that we're on the brink regarding the FFP rules, so I'm guessing the debt situation isn't looking good either.

he was a very successful manager for us, who was also a very decent bloke, and was RFC to his very bone marrow. so of course I like him.

but I firmly believe you should never go back, and also that he would be a divisive appointment due to all the tw@s we have 'supporting' the team.

please feel free to question what I say and think whenever you like, im always happy to clarify for you

haven't improved?!
over last season no, but adkins was forced to sell Morrison and ALF when he didn't want to, so improving on a team with them in in would always be a bit tough on that budget.

take cox and norwood out of this team though, and we are in the bottom 3, guaranteed.

Where's the evidence he didn't want ALF to go? I got the distinct impression he was content with all departures from the club over the summer - barring Morrison and McCarthy.

content, as in- this is the only way I can get some money in order to buy anyone at all and make the team my own, yes

I believe, though it is only belief, based on bugger all, that if it were solely up to him he probably have kept the three old players, AND bought the new ones

Everyone who posted on here about how progressive Adkins' appointment was and how his "brand of football" was going to take us to the next level please raise your hand now and admit you were wrong.

My prediction: we make a supremely underwhelming appointment and struggle for the rest of the season.

Tbf, it sounds like you've already made up your mind. Whoever we appoint, you'll be negative and view it as underwhelming.

On paper, Atkins was a good appointment. Shame it didn't work out.

Fair question Paul. Not sure how I feel about him tbh - kind of gone off him since he lost his hair and his interview style isn't the best. Also seems like more of a coach than a manager to me.

Can't fault the top-level experience though. Guess it's a case of wait and see.
