Oldham board members and family apparently received death threats.

That's pretty poor IMO. They were taking a PR gamble of course but at the end of the day they're just looking to employ someone after his release as is both their and his right.

I wonder how many of those outraged members of the public know anything of his crime apart from the term 'convicted rapist'.

Great points re Marlon King by P!ssedOff too. To me he seems more of a threat to society and women but there was none of this attention and outrage when he was coming back into the game.

It's an interesting question, but I'm assuming people have taken it into consideration already or Oldham wouldn't have got so close to signing him and those opposed to Evans playing again would've surely used it as a reason he shouldn't play.

I'm sure I was told that when Jahson Downes and his mates were released after their rape sentences they weren't allowed to play with or against u18s in local football.

Oldham Athletic have decided against signing convicted rapist Ched Evans following threats to the club's "staff and their families".
A club director told BBC sports editor Dan Roan that a staff member was informed a named relative would be raped if the deal went ahead.

What is the issue here - Are they against ex-offenders / those released on licence being integrated back into society? If so, maybe they should be protesting against the courts who gave a sentence that allowed the offender to be out and amongst us.

Personally, I think it's just a case of people thinking it's disgusting a convicted rapist can get a job as a footballer being paid a good amount of money for playing football when I have to work hard for a living / cope on benefits etc etc..... nothing to do with the actual crime, I doubt anyone has looked into the case their selves before forming an opinion.

Also, those who don't want anything to do with him - I assume they wouldn't object to him getting a job elsewhere, maybe delivering post to their homes or serving them in Tescos?

There does seem to be a wider agenda in the press to stop Evans getting another contract by giving such wide coverage to clubs he's talking to, we didn't see the same level of coverage with other offenders.

The issue is they don't think he's been punished enough, as with any mob logical thought isn't coming into it, and will continue to hound him until they forget about him or someone else comes along.

There's whole host of players who've been guilty of both illegal and immoral behaviour that really shouldn't ever be in a position to be a 'role model'.

At what point do you draw the line to say they shouldn't be well paid because they're not a good role model? Roasting and general womanising? Drink Driving? Violent behaviour? Theft? Sexual assault? Accused of rape? Convicted of rape?

The idea that someone who's a good footballer should suddenly be a role model for kids etc is rather daft in itself. A sporting hero admired for their ability yes, perhaps appreciated for the hard work and the sacrifices they've made to make the most of their ability, but help up as a moral role model? Nope, don't see why that should follow.

Definitely this, and it's oxf*rd bizarre.

Person A: Once had sex with a woman whom a court ruled, based upon video evidence, was too drunk to give consent.
Person B: Has a long history of violent crime towards women.

Person A is not an acceptable 'role model' so cannot continue his career, but we've no problem with Person B?


Obviously one might argue that it's not a competition, and that there's room for multiple villains to be chastised, but this argument would sound a bit insincere coming from any of the perpetrators of this current media witch hunt.

Agree with most of what is written above. To an extent, Evans seems to be a victim of circumstance, with various people chipping in voicing opinions based on his crime being "rape", when plenty of other players have been committed of crimes and come back into the game. Yet to be mentioned in this thread is Lee Hughes, who killed a couple of people via dangerous driving.

Rapists come out of prison and go to work in various jobs afterwards, and obviously whilst it's difficult for them to get work with their history, there isn't the big public outcry about them being allowed back in to work/the community. Football is (obviously a sport first) but it is Evans' line of work and how he earns a living. It seems to be purely that he is a footballer, working in a well paid, high profile environment that seems to be the biggest stick to beat him with for most people.

For me, the statement he made today that finally acknowledges that actually, it's not just his life that's been oxf*rd up by this whole situation is a big step in the right direction for him.
