It would be interesting to line up people's views on Guthrie and Norwood. They do more or less the same stuff with a similar level of ability - Guthrie slightly better running with the ball, Norwood slightly better defensively - but Norwood is currently being touted by some as a top-draw Championship midfielder whereas Guthrie is a useless oxf*rd who can do no right and is dragging us down. I don't think Guthrie's relatively large wages are justified and I think we'll be fine without him, but he's much better than some (perhaps McDermott-ites?) are willing to admit.

He was decent for two months last season and that has been the sum total of any positive impact he has had. Two months out of two and a half seasons is pretty desperate stuff.

Re Norwood, personally I'm still not entirely convinced about him yet. However, he does not slow the game down the same way as Guthrie and nor does he appear to have quite the disruptive and negative attitude towards his team mates.

The big difference between Norwood and Guthrie is the size of their wage which is probably why Norwood will be forgiven for things that Guthrie won't.

I have always felt Guthrie needs a second or two longer to pick his pass. Therefore a move with momentum seems to stall when it gets to him and the ball has a tendency to arrive slightly behind the receiving player, which in turn means they have to take longer to bring it under control.

He contributed nothing on the pitch except two yard passes playing people (usually central defenders) into trouble, massively telegraphed Hollywood passes that always allowed the opposition to get their shape and then tantrums at his team mates when the above failed. All done at the pace of a snail dragging the entire team down because he HAD to be the focal point of the team.

Mismanagement my arse. And I couldn't give a shit if he gives good copy. He's there to play not to talk bollocks after the game.

Some stats for Norwood this season taken from Who Scored:

25 apps - 5 assists - 5 MoM - 79.8% pass completion

Also makes the most tackles per game on average in the Championship with 3.8, with 2nd and 3rd being 3.5.

Lets also take in the fact that Norwood and Jake Taylor are the same age... I'd say Norwood still has time to improve a lot and he's already a very good player.

I actually thought on his day he could be class - in the Championship - but thought he was a bad character when we signed him (had a bad feeling about it too) and he hasn't changed that view since. Small part of me thought when we signed Norwood that he was Guthrie's long-term replacement, and given that Guthrie has hardly played since it was looking likely he would be off in the summer anyway.

Around the time we signed Chalobah I actually started to wonder whether we may be offloading Guthrie but then saw he was injured and assumed not. Given that we're willing to let him go now rather than in the summer, disruptive once too many times? And maybe he's not injured after all.

I wouldn't be renewing Guthrie's contract in the summer, not unless we were very confident we could get a fee or he was prepared to take a big wage cut (both very unlikely). I'll also concede tempo, though I find it hard to compare a relatively small part of a player's game with such a big time gap separating them (Guthrie's not been fit for more than a few matches in over a year).

Defensive quality, Norwood has the edge, but Guthrie's stats for last season were very good too - much better than Karacan, Williams, or any of our other players for that matter, and a smidge better than Norwood at Huddersfield.
