Were Chelsea champions when they won the CL?

The European Cup to me was always a Champions only competition. Very sad that it turned into a money circus. Clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea (I'd exclude Citeh who seem genuinely desperate to win it, like United), seem to use it as a cash cow. Personally I just think "so what" to its winners and qualifiers. Clubs like Chelsea have bought their place in it. I'd love Southampton to qualify because they will have earned it and give hope to the rest of us.

Southampton have spent lots of money on players in recent seasons. They were one of the highest spenders in Europe a couple of seasons ago. They have no more 'earned' it than anyone else. They only give hope to those with hugely wealthy owners who die and leave you all their money....

They've had to spend big, they've had their team completely decimated by the bigger clubs.

You did indeed but for big club like them they get over it quickly and move on whereas a smaller club like Chelsea will talk about it for years and years because it's a bigger achievement for you than anything the club have done before in your entire history. It's kind of like when Reading got 106 points, means a lot to us not so much to everybody else that we play against.

Look I'm not having a dig but Bayern bounced back from their defeat and did something about it the following season by winning the CL because that's what big clubs do, they take their loses and their wins in equal measure and they still strive to be bigger and better. Now compare that to Chelsea, you're still going on about it now and the following season you rested on your laurels and crashed out in the group stage.

Right now you're going to reply with "but we won the Europa League " because you're just that predictable. But winning a lesser tournament the following year isn't really the same m8 as it's not a scenario where you are trying to be bigger and better as it's a lesser achievement.

Historical side note, Chelsea would have qualified for the first European Cup but the FA banned them from participating. Apparently that was because the FA thought it was a distraction from domestic football, although I'd like to think they stopped Chelsea from competing through fear of embarrassment.
