Ronald Koeman banter

Ronald Koeman shot down rumours of a move for Adam Federici today - claiming he has never even heard of the Australian international goalkeeper.

Reports emerged on Sunday that Saints were lining up a swoop for the 30-year-old following regular No.1 Fraser Forster's knee injury.

But when asked about his interest in Federici by reporters at his weekly press conference this afternoon, Koeman's response was bordering on insulting.

"Who?" He said.

When told Federici played for Reading, the Dutchman added: "No, it's not true."

Federici, who is hot favourite to be named Royals' player of the season, is out of contract in the summer and could leave on a free transfer.

RonLAD Koeman more like, someone buy that man a drink!

Classless. Even if you don't know who the player is you just say "good player but we're not interested". No need to insult any player like that.

Why would he know who he is - has he ever been involved in a game that Federici has played in?

That's the logic which led us to signing Blackman and Akpan.

tbf, its like someone saying to you

"What do you make of Luke Daniels?"

Most of you wouldn't have a clue but he's the goalkeeper of Scunthorpe, 18th in League One

As a Football manager in the premier league it's fair to assume he has some working knowledge of goalkeepers in the top couple of leagues. I don't work in football yet I do. Plus the rumours were flying for days. Of course he knows who he is.

Federici is one of our most overrated players ever tbh. 18 months ago he was playing second fiddle to QPR's now second choice 'keeper. 30 years old too, albeit the (far superior) Marcus Hahnemann went on until his mid to late 30s.

Federici is a moderate Championship 'keeper. Happy with him in the side in this league, but I doubt he can ever be considered 'top class'.

I rate Feds. He is very comfortable to receive the ball to feet, and his kicking from his hands can be top-drawer. Granted, he has the tendency to make one or two too many camera saves, but he still keeps them out. He could improve his commanding of his area, but maybe he elects to stay further back because he backs himself to make the save instead? I think he's very good at this level, and we miss him when he's not playing.

Single handedly got us relegated from the Prem as well.

It's nothing like that though. For obvious reasons to do with Koeman being paid millions to do a job that would in part require a knowledge of a range of players and their ability.
In the old days Maurice Evans would pride himself on knowing pretty much every player in the league, and having watched them several times. McDermott was almost as obsessive but maybe these new tangled foreign managers can't be bothered....

As I understand it the comment had more to do with his hearing than his knowledge anyway !!

So something that isn't that important but I have always wondered:
When people give salary based on 'per week' is that multiplied by 52? So does Federici make 1.5 Million per year? Or is the 'per week' based on the weeks that the season is being played (Aug - May)?

So 1.27 Million per year?

It was sometime in the early 60's that clubs stopped paying players less in the summer. Was it Stanley Matthews who pointed out he was as good a player in July as he was in September so why should he be paid less....
