Group Save Train Tickets (move if necessary but important)

by dan19 » 13 Apr 2015 16:49

Been on phone to First Great Western - Told Group Save on journey via London Paddington is UNAVAILABLE to buy on Saturday due to the amount of Reading supporters going up. Unfair in my opinion, but you can still buy in advance online now.

Does this include Gold Card discounts? - Those with a Gold Card season ticket usually get 1/3rd off Rail and Tube as do up to 3 others travelling with them (although it's 60% off for those aged 5-15)

Group buys are always available if you ask nicely and ask the right person. 8)

Does it help to have a sob story rather than saying your going to the footy?

I don't know but assume if you have a specific card, it'll be valid.

I would go to the counter and say you're not going to the football, just a day out in London.........I even got a group discount to Twyford last week. The bloke wasn't going to do it until I said "If you don't ask, you don't get". Managed to get 4 for the price of 3. Not a big saving but a saving none the less.

No restriction on Reading to Waterloo route, just Reading to London Paddington until 17:00

Still lets you book a GS on the journey planner though...so I would deny all knowledge and just get booking online... the trains will be so busy it's unlikely that there will be anyone checking..

Is it really worth the hassle?

Just pay full price and get on with it

£7.50 each you're saving - It's an extra 2 pints in Reading.... Or half a pint in London.

We just ordered ours going from didcot parkway due to the train from Swindon being part bus via oxford and taking an extra 90 minutes or something stupid.

Can quite often get BOGOF, especially in the summer. Works out about £11 each instead of £22 for a travel card.

From what I understand reading twitter, FGW have finally realised what's happening on Saturday, decided to withdraw all group save discounts (not blatant profiteering you understand, they've actually stated this is to encourage people to drive rather than use public tansport :!: ) and then said any tickets already bought won't be valid - but don't worry, return them to the point of sale and you can get a refund (subject to a £10 admin fee)

It's now been pointed out to their absurdly named social media assistants that this isn't terribly reasonable and they are now saying all tickets already purchased will be valid

It's going to be utter chaos on Saturday

I think we should all be very grateful that FGW aren't just cancelling all trains this weekend for essential maintenance
