Nothing wrong with the decision to pull the plug on Brian. However, it only became necessary because the owners and board failed to back him and make the necessary level of investment at the right time with Brian choosing the right players.

Yeah, McDermott was crap. Winning the championship with only one game to go and then struggling in the prem league with a team including such greats as pog, guthrie, pearce, gunter, mccleary , Blackman and HRK was an embarrassment. Any decent manager would have obviously achieved much greater things with players like that.

I don't know, 06 was special, but McDermott's run in was much more exciting.

before oxf*rd off himself and leaving us days from bankruptcy

cheers anton you massive cock piece.

in fact, its a bit rich to say nothing wrong with the decision, when it was down to them, not him

disagree.
that unexpected run, the away wins at saints and west ham, plus the forest late goal and celebrations make that season the equal of the 106 in terms of sheer excitement

You really reckon that beats the first time ever at Wembley and a 4-1 victory when you get there against a top team?

Then again, you had to be there when Hicks went up to lift the Simod cup...

Agreed, especially in context of the club at the time. It was our day in the sun, we knew our place in the footballing world but we bloodied the nose of the big boys and there was a sense that it would never happen again. it was rare that we even progressed far enough in the Cups to even get drawn against a bigger team, let alone actually beat one but we did it 5 times in that run. Fantastic

Of the two promotions, equal footing really. It was great to hit the front at the half way point of the season and just leave everyone for dust. The 5 month victory parade around England was fun and it was great to go into games expecting to win regardless of the opposition rather than looking to where we might pick up points. However, we knew we were up in February and it was all about setting targets. We only had ourselves to beat really. Doing it the other way and hunting down the pack from miles behind in 2012 was just as good., chipping away at that lead week by week and then winning it with a game to spare. More attritional certainly but, by god, it was exciting, every game mattered.

Just 4 league games before the sack.

"Reading's impressive recent form has been characterised by a steely resilience "

"Reading have done it again. Another day, another win. They're coming thick and fast for Brian McDermott"

What a shambles.

Not good enough for Reading fans.

We're getting exactly what we deserve.

Yeah agreed. Anyone upset with the failings of Adkins and Clarke should look at the poll on this thread and realise this is what most people wanted!

What people know now > what people knew then. I thought booting him was hasty but it was a proper conundrum at the time - not all his failure can be put down to that ubercock Anton.

take a look at the line up as well. 6/11 that started still at the club & 3 that aren't were those getting the most stick. that's team's not that much better than what we've got now. who said we weren't overachieving?
