less prolific than Pog

by linkenholtroyal » 06 May 2015 13:43

after pogs lack of goal prowess this season and a reading career of 1 goal in 3.875 games it got me thinking is there any reading striker that played more than 50 games for us and has a worse game to goal ratio??

Less than 50 games, but clearly a worse striker - Paul Brayson, 42 appearances, 1 goal, In statistical terms, for those of you who struggle to work these things out, that's 1 goal every 42 games.

Simon Church - 104 Apps 22 Goals
Noel Hunt - 145 Apps 33 Goals

Can't be bothered to look up anymore but I'm sure theres loads.. Pog really isn't that bad considering his contribution to the rest of the team.

Noel Hunt scored about 3 goals in 200 games for us, so he must run Pog close.
Jim McIntyre was bought as a striker and hardly scored.

I'm sure there's lots. Shane Long was a goal every 3.955, if wiki is right. Although that would include a lot of sub appearances.

Noel Hunt seemed to work well up front as a second striker. Perhaps assists should also be factored in?

Looks like Pog is actually one of our most prolific strikers of all time.

Handsome Man Jim McIntyre was bought as a striker and hardly scored.
97 appearances, 14 goals = 1 goal every 6.9 games, However he did revert to left midfield/left wing during his time at the club

Shaun Goater 43 app, 12 goals, one goal every 3.5 games

Leroy Lita 83 app, 20 goals, one goal every 4.15 games which makes him worse than the Pog

Simon Church is prolific by this season's standards. Likely to be released by Charlton. Perhaps we should get him back.

It makes a difference though, if you're part of a team where five or six top scorers get 10-15 apiece, or if you are one of only two strikers who would be expected to pop in 20+ goals each. If you're a lone striker and your only job is to tuck it into the back of the net, I'd say you've failed when you consistently can't hit a barn door from six yards out (I'm looking at you, Glenn Murray). Sure, he was lucky a few times, as was the Pog. But, in terms of expectations, the Russian has been disappointing. He should have scored more.

It would be interesting to see if - taking into account fees and wages - Pavel's goals have been the most expensive in Reading history.
