Pepe the Horseman
GH Royal Martin Butler - 103 Apps 32 Goals

That's better than Pog. :?

Just thought I'd give another example that's on a similar level, it's not better by that much!

janesdaddy It makes a difference though, if you're part of a team where five or six top scorers get 10-15 apiece, or if you are one of only two strikers who would be expected to pop in 20+ goals each. If you're a lone striker and your only job is to tuck it into the back of the net, I'd say you've failed when you consistently can't hit a barn door from six yards out (I'm looking at you, Glenn Murray). Sure, he was lucky a few times, as was the Pog. But, in terms of expectations, the Russian has been disappointing. He should have scored more.

It would be interesting to see if - taking into account fees and wages - Pavel's goals have been the most expensive in Reading history.

But was Pog signed with the intention of playing him on a regular basis as a lone striker or as part of a strike force with the added benefit of his overall contribution to a team's play?

These are only League stats but how about

Dean Horrix 158 games, 35 goals

Stuart Lovell 227 games, 58 goals

Leroy Lita 83 games 20 goals

Steve Moran 136 games 30 goals.

And to p[rove a point the other way, Ollie Kearns 86 games 40 goals and he really was shite

So yeah, absolutely loads of former Reading forwards with over 50 games who have a worse strike rate than Pog which kind of proves that statistics in isolation are complete bollocks

Keith Scott? It still pains me that we signed him.

But no goals have been so expensive, whether he's on £40k or whatever a week, he's the biggest waste of money in our history, and please don't tell me he works so hard for the team that's the friggin least he can do as he doesn't score goals

Appearances are meaningless. Goals per minute tells the story.

Shane had zillions of appearances of 1-2-3-4-5-6 minutes, for example.

Hunt had about two seasons where he came on for the last 25 minutes

Points Per Game would be my ultimate stat - which given that we've just finished 4 points above a Rotherham side, (who themselves were deducted three points), Im not holding my breath that Pog's is better than Hunt's.

All stats are just indicators at best, that can skew reality if taken in isolation with no contextualisation.

Unusual circumstances at the extreme ends of the scale will always cause a problem with any stat based interpretation if you look solely at the stats.

What about Carla Asaba?

The man who was breaking in a pair of horse dentures and inexplicably went on to score bucket loads of goals for Gillingham when he looked like he couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo in the hoops.

Pleased to see Hunt & Long so high, they were a brilliant partnership.

Hunt was seriously under-rated as his stats show.

Surprised to see Mackie so low.

I have been saying Pog is shite for months, however some of the muppets on this board begged to differ.

Apparently he works hard

Yes but equally you could say Pog has played in a side void of flair where chances have been at a premium. This wasn't the case for Hunt for example.
