Who is our best young player that can command a starting XI place then?

Now that's a different subject. I was challenging the assertion that he is our "best young player".

In terms of first team I don't think there is much to choose between him and Obita despite the slight drop in performance from the latter last season. That dip should serve as a warning to not hype Hector too much.

sandman Can't say I'm a big fan of Hector but at least the club are showing some intent.

Interested as to why you're not a fan of his? Comfortable on the ball, good passer, had a blinder against Arsenal. Pretty much everything Pearce isn't, and he'll get better and better.

Poor concentration mainly. He does one good thing and then immediately follows it up with three bad. Also dragged out of position too often and gives away too many needless free kicks.

Hopefully he will improve like we all hope he will.

Edit. So basically what SCIAG said.

A bit of a rare agreed with sandman here (without reading the whole thread).

I think Hector is a decent prospect and did get better as the season went on but, as I said elsewhere today, I think he's the most over-rated player in the squad at the moment.

He certainly has the attributes to improve and become a good player but he's been far too inconsistent both within games and over the season to be lauded quite as highly as he has been. I guess it's the modern fascination with defenders who can dribble or make a 40 yard pass now and again as opposed to defend their near post, win their headers and keep a forward where they can see them and defend against them.

Pleased he's signed though as hopefully he'll keep learning and get someone near the level of defensive performance we've seen for 3 or 4 years from Pearce (who's also had his iffy's spells to of course).

For the record I don't dislike Hector, I hope he develops further and justifies the opinion of those proclaiming him, but if he constitutes our "best signing of the summer" rather than our "best signing of the summer so far" then we are in for a long season.

sandman That dip should serve as a warning to not hype Hector too much.

"That dip should serve as a warning to the club to ensure that there are players around Hector that suit his playing style and can help nurture him, for instance Jobi provided a lot of defensive support and encouragement for Obita during his early games and development. McAnuff should take a fair amount of credit for Obita's performances that season. Perhaps this suggests Pearce's future would be better served elsewhere."

Indeed, another good example of why this is not "the signing of the summer". However, the player we sign to partner Hector in central defence may very well be.

Could make an unconvincing case for Kuhl currently being better than Hector, and of course there's Obita.

I think "best young player" implies something beyond current ability.

I'd be more worried about losing Kuhl, Tanner, Tshibola, Stacey, and Sheppard. If we had two reliable senior central defenders, then you could throw in Cooper, Dickie, Fosu, Cardwell, and some of the younger players (particularly Barrett, Smith, and McIntyre).

I do want to emphasise that I think Hector is probably good enough to start 46 matches next season and the season after that, so I'm definitely not complaining about this development, I just think he's got to keep improving and he's still not quite as good as Pearce.

He's got everything he needs to be better than Pearce except experience. Part of the reason he makes more mistakes than we'd like is because he's very proactive and tries to go and get the ball first. Sometimes he misjudges it or gets beaten and that leaves a big hole. His other weakness is that he's a good passer and he knows it, so tries to do too much. This is all just judgement based. He's steadily improved through the last 18 months and there's no reason to think he won't continue to do so.

Given his appearances, ability, potential and steady improvement, I don't see how anyone can make a convincing case that he isn't our best young player right now. Obita has just had a fairly poor season and still isn't convincing as a definite left back or a definite left winger, despite his definite talent. Hector's streets ahead of Cooper (largely because of his experience, but I think he's got slightly better all round attributes anyway) and Taylor. No one else in the youth has played more than a handful of games, so can't possibly be considered ahead of him yet.

Saying all that, I'd be very nervous about going into next season with Hector as our senior centreback because of his relative lack of experience. He needs someone steady like Pearce alongside him, with Cooper deputising for him or with him in short spells.

Hector is one of the few substantial bright sparks from last season.

teignmouth hoops Are you guys watching the same player.

This is Hob Nob :|

Some of us see the same player as the professionals who offered this fantastic prospect a 3 year contract (no doubt containing a substantial "get out") ; A player fast approaching a level too good for us to hang onto..............................those who see something else deserve the sympathy of those who can still be arsed.

If you could look out the window you would see the team training in the back garden with a goal drawn on the shed in chalk.

Can't help but think Hector's actually sealing the deal on a used motor.
