Winston Smith I like how he only played for them for 18 months where they were almost relegated and I dont remember him being anything sensational, yet in the last few years he has taken on the aura of some kind of West Ham legend.

He was very decent for them, it was Everton where he couldn't be arsed.

He was a bit of a cult figure from what I remember.

Simon Osborne only played 30 odd games for us but I still look back on him as one of my favourite Reading players.

Sigurasson only played 42 games for us (6 less than Bilic did for West Ham) and look how he's held with Reading fans....

Gylfi Sigurdsson was quite a bit hit as well.

Fair enough, time doesnt have to have a bearing on a players legend status.

I just remember him being good, but nothing amazing. Club record signing, not even their best defender (Dicks was better) during a season they were almost relegated, and didnt hang around long.

My point was that he has become a much bigger West Ham legend in the years since he has left than he was the day he left. A bit like when Joe Cole seemingly became Englands gr8est ever player during those months he was injured building up to an international tournament

Have to chuckle at the number of Newcastle fans who are negative about them appointing a manager who's got experience of winning loads at one of the worlds biggest clubs as assistant before, in his own right, winning a domestic cup here, qualifying for Europe, getting to UEFA cup final and then winning a league title with an unfashionable team.

People seem to be a bit down on his time at Derby but I think he did a cracking job there. They were pretty dire before he took over and he then took them to a play off final and was close this season (I think it was probably only the Newcastle speculation that stopped them going up in the end).

His time at England was a bit of a failure, and he's not been a total success everywhere but then I'd argue he's taken on some pretty tricky jobs too.

Perhaps the Geordies just don't like his Dutch accent...

Just sums up your average football fan really.

I would say your average fan is a casual fan, and therefore doesn't spend time reading about what goes on outside the world of their own club + maybe some casual CL viewing.

Their view on anything else is mostly formed from whatever exagger8ed headlines said topic has made in recent memory.

'McClaren? Didnt he once hold an umbrella?..... No f*cking way do I want an umbrella holder at my club!'

If he is successful he'll be the best thing since sliced bread there and will get the best of both worlds. Otherwise he'll be toast.

Probably needed the dough?

Even though it goes against the grain, he does have to earn a crust.

Hopefully he'll get them on a roll and they can get promoted.
