I have to admit that, whenever I have seen his name on the opposition's team sheet, I have felt that we have a chance of exploiting his weaknesses.

In my book, he always looks like a walking red card, usually through a late or poorly timed challenge because he has been beaten for pace.

Not really enthused, but i spose would seem a good replacement. Don't understand the certainty he'd be cheaper than Pearce though. Pearce will have had a relegation wage reduction, so there can't be that much difference. Either McShane must be willing to accept less or we're willing to pay more. Fair enough on the first... Don't approve on the second as it's then an unnecessary change which is always at least part gamble.

Colour me unimpressed. This is a step backwards. McShane's not held down a place in a side for 10 years, he's behind Pearce in the Ireland pecking order, and he's prone to silly mistakes. Hopefully he has a late-career renaissance but I don't see where all the optimism is coming from. Whoopee, we've signed another Championship club's 5th choice centre back, that makes up for losing one of our most successful defenders ever

My initial reaction was, not good enough for the Prem so it didn't excite me, (tbf I always remember his performance for Sunderland at the Mad Stad in the 2nd PL season which probably colours my judgement) but at Championship level and also being a bit younger than I thought he should be decent enough I guess.

He's on a par with Pearce for Ireland though isn't he? Pearce hasn't played for them for a while?

I think our days of signing anyone good enough for the premiership are behind us, in the medium term at least.

Looks to me like we're back to about the time when Coppell started to make the team his own after joining - picking up what we needed short term without busting the budget but all the time keeping an eye on the team structure a couple of years down the line.
