Returning Hero

by lewesroyal » 04 Aug 2015 11:54

Having seen my FB and Twatter feeds go into meltdown from BHAFC friends over the return of Zamorra, are there any old favourites still plying their trade you'd happily take back? (Gylfi is a given!)

To be fair, there are not too many players in the right age range to make a return.

Jem Karacan, especially if he stays fit and develops at Galatasary.
Adam LeFondre, he can score goals and that's what we need.
Michael Antonio
Adam Federici
Jamie Mackie
Nathaniel Chalobah

Should have gone back for Doyle and Kebe, even if they were good back ups, the squad is pretty slim

No thanks to Karacan and Feds. Happy both moved on.

Slim or not, they're both way past it - Doyle has been an expensive disaster for a few years.

Doyle's career has been largely in freefall since he left here. I did wonder if a return to his spiritual home might have been the thing he needs rather than a trip to the bizarre world of MLS.

Never really worked out for Little and Kitson, I have a hunch it would have been a failure with Doyle too.

McCarthy, Federici, Hamer, Pearce, Mariappa, Bertrand, Chalobah, Karacan, Guthrie, Sidwell, Gylfi, Mackie, Kebe, Long, and ALF would all go into the first team if we signed them tomorrow.

So would Antonio, Henry, Wickham, Austin, Afobe, but they were never first choice here so I'm not sure they'd count.

I'd also take Rosenior, Tabb, and Morrison, but I don't think they'd be improvements on what we've got.

An ex-Reading side would be much better than the first team right now: McCarthy; Rosenior, Pearce, Mariappa, Bertrand; Sidwell, Karacan; Antonio, Gylfi, Mackie; Austin. Subs: Federici, Morrison, Chalobah, Guthrie, Henry, Wickham, Long. Aside from the right flank and maybe Karacan, that's weaker in every position and the subs.

Simon Cox wasn't it? Until we resigned him and everyone decided he was shit again.

Given few deny McCleary is quality, McAnuff put in more than his fair share of assists and HRK scored lots of consolation goals, not forgetting Kebe ... do you really think Antonio would have played more than a tiny handful of games in the Premier League?

Do you really think he'd have developed as well getting 5/6 starts and 10 sub appearances compared to 42 appearances for Wednesday in the Championship?

It's ok for a player to go, develop elsewhere and become good. That doesn't have to mean an error's been made. Had we not gone up I'm sure he'd have stayed and worked himself into a mainstay as Kebe's legs fell apart. But we went up.

The one and only Robin Friday (RIP) for me. The thing is, given the present set up, he'd be hard pushed to have his pre-match medicinal refreshment and get to the ground in time for kick off. What a player and what a character. I know it's a different ethic now but even so, where have all the characters gone?

The MLS has moved on hugely. It is certainly not a bizarre world. There is serious football played there. Doyle will have a good experience for a year or two if he is up to it.

Given the speed with which American sports move, I predict their teams will be way way above Championship standards within one year.

Player had talent. Giving him 10 mins here 10 mins there was doing him no good particularly as there was shit ahead of him. McDermott oxf*rd him up.

The fact WBA and Norwich are bidding up to £7 million for him would tell me an error has been made.
