Favorite goal at the Mad Stad

by WoodleyRoyal » 17 Aug 2015 15:16

Whilst wallowing in my own self pity at how shit we are, and the fact we will never score a goal again, i was thinking what is my favorite goal scored at the Madejski Stadium. Tough question. Each to their own on why the goal is YOUR favorite, is it because of importance, comedy value, or just simply put, a belter.

A few spring to mind:

Bobby Conveys goal against millwall 2005 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKNEo3iMHDA never have i seen a Reading player pick up the ball just outside our own box an then to go all the way by themselves. A truly remarkable goal.

Murtys penalty against QPR - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e5R7mHDWss being the only outfield player not to have scored in THAT season, not a great goal but a great occasion.

Pog's 90th minute winner against west brom in january 2013 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1weWHV3Ky08 i don't think i have ever celebrated a goal so much and in the melee scraping the skin off my right shin on the back of the seat in front of me.

One of Le Fondre customary january goals most notably the equaliser against Chelsea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VEvKtK-TZc on the following home league game from the above goal ^ i enjoyed this mainly because it shut the Chelsea scum up from singing their champions of Europe song.

McCleary fine effort against Burnley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q27gwlfiYSg just a belter nothing much else to say on that one.

Legietwoods goal against forrest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzSOg0RO4wQ as it sent us up.

Nicky forster against wigan play off semis 2001 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF5SMIzkbgk first ever full house 1 nil down curo misses the penalty forster slots it home absolute pandemonium i remember hugging complete randoms a truely truely special occasion and such a memorable goal.

There are many many more that i could mention, but i would be here all day (lita over head kick) all 6 i repeat SIX goals scored against west ham  Probably the forster & le fondre winner against west brom win it for me - both make the hairs stick up on the back of my neck when i watch them again. OK forster wins it for me :D

one final one, a comedy effort from notts county player Ian Richardson an own goal, in 1998 i cant find a video of it but the nob nob match reports explain it well enough '
The goal came roughly midway through the first half and was an extremely generous Christmas present from the away side. With the keeper well off his line the County defender attempted to make a back pass as if the keeper was on his line. If he'd been on his line it would have been fine. But instead it looped high over the keepers head and dropped into an empty net for one of the worst (best) own goals you're likely to see. 1-0 to the Royals. Well - we wouldn't have scored any other way.'

so what have been your favorite goals at the Mad Stad?

For jubil8ion probably Le Fondre's against Chelsea.

For quality Lita's winner against Palace.

Soft spot for Kitson's second in a 2-0 win over West Ham, Cureton's chip against Burnley, Sigurdsson's last goal.

Probably Forster v Wigan for me.

I do remember an absolute beaut from Cureton v Burnley though, which Pards explained on the season review video that he "calls that one 'the dipper' "...as if he does it all the time in training.

As for goals against, does anyone remember the shambolic equaliser for Oxford to make it 1-1 in the classic 4-3 match? Whitehead with a howler!

Fozzy's winner against Wigan. That night the whole stadium rocked... I could feel the floor physically moving after he scored !

Might be a different game, but Notts County OG at 1:51 is a beaut.

Can't argue with the ones chosen, and in all honesty most of my favourites have already been picked, but to add another to the mix - De La Cruz's 60 yard run and finish against Neil Warnock's Sheffield United. Delightful.

Hard to come up with a favourite one, I'll have to have a longer think. However, one that immediately springs to mind that hasn't already been mentioned, is Long's header against Middlesbrough, following a 60 yard, cross field pass by Ian Harte.

Sammy Igoe against Bury back in about 2000. I was directly in line with the flight of the ball as he whelted it from about 35 yards like an arrow into the top corner

I missed that because I was queuing outside the ground to buy my kid for a quid ticket. We won 4-1 that day, with Butler, Caskey and Cureton scoring I think?

I would be interested to know whether we've scored an equal number of goals at either end, or whether it's more heavily weighted in favour of the North.

A few others not listed that are worthy of mention:

Jamie Cureton's thunderbolt from the centre circle
Caskey v Bournemouth
I don't remember who scored this one or who the opponents were, but in our 106 season we had a corner and the ball boy/girl places the ball in the area and Glen Little ran up the byline and didn't stop, he just booted the ball and it into the box and the opposition and most of the Reading players were caught napping and it results in a goal.

Matt Mills og when he was playing against us.
