handbags_harris Decent win all told. Portsmouth very impressive, keep up that level of performance and they'll walk League 2.

I always think there is very little context to be place on a cup tie against lower league opposition. There is rarely any correlation to league form in terms of league position, and yesterday was no exception. Portsmouth are 30-odd positions below us yet there was nothing between the sides over the 90 minutes. Typically the overreaction from many is a bit laughable, suggestions that we were "outplayed" and "awful" bely what was actually a generally well ground out result against a side that have good quality and an excellent manager. Typically of sides that will play us, when we had the ball they hassled and harried, denied us space in the middle knowing we had nowhere near enough threat on the flanks until McCleary entered the fray and with the ball looked to work it out to the flanks or play through their big no.17.

Both sides had clear chances in the first half, bit disappointed with the defence being undone so easily but with better conviction in front of goal we should have notched twice, maybe three times ourselves. All told an even half with the goal a result of a horrible error that al-Habsi seems to have in his 90-minute locker. Second half was a bit of a grind until the equaliser, Pompey simply had to hold onto their lead and look to play on the break. Luckily for us, our defensive resolve is such that I don't see us being undone on the counter much this season, and in the end an excellent equaliser from Blackman was the turning point at which I felt we would go on and win. It's obvious to say the equaliser was crucial but with our lack of threat it the crucial element takes even more emphasis because we simply don't look like being able to take many of the clear chances we create. Even in the end the winner was a scrappy affair which should have been lashed into the roof of the net, but the build up play to both goals was Championship quality showing through against League 2 opponents, and that ultimately is the margin between the sides. Pompey matched us in every area, but the individual moments of quality that open up a defence were much more likely to come from us because we have the personnel to do it.

Pleased with the win naturally, not at all disappointed with the performance as a game taken in 90 minutes of isolation as I felt we just about deserved it, and Pompey fans are still knuckle dragging, gold and Nike wearing pikeys (touch of class pre-match with the 21 for Dolan though). Kudos for the bearded bloke at the front of the upper tier to our left who utterly lost it after our winner

He went mental "you're just from fcuking Reading, you live in fcuking Reading you pcunts"

Just for the record, and in particular for those that described this as a strong Pompey side, who should get promoted, this was mainly their Reserves side with 8 changes from their last league game on Saturday.
The little kid playing up front who scored is 18 and made his first team debut and scored in the previous round when marked by that great defender, Alex Pearce!!
It could just be that Pompey do have a strong squad but this was not their normal Div 2 side and one that we should have beaten easily.
Still, 2 goals in a game is almost enough for an open bus tour and McCleary being back is wonderful news.

tidus_mi2 I go to home games only, so it could also be an indicator of how shit our home support is.

Pompey dumped Derby out of the cup, and a helluva lot of Championship sides
have already gone out. Cup football is cup football, and we have won every cup
game we've played this season. Good enough for me.

This is a VERY promising squad, lacking a bit of luck and an in-form striker.

IMO it all looks very promising. One unlucky defeat first game followed by
five games undefeated and we are in the third round of the league cup.

Terrible, ain't it?

5 games undefeated looks a lot less impressive when it reads 1 win, 4 dtaws (after 90mins).

Luck prevented us from winning at Birmingham
Mistake prevented us at Sheffield Wednesday
Luck against Leeds
Luck against MK Dons

On paper not great, in reality something we should be positive and optimistic about. We need some luck to go our way.

I do think if we can get the final third sorted we could well be in a promotion chase but that's not happening right now, only thing I'd disagree with is luck vs Leeds, that game was terrible and neither team looked like scoring if we'd kept playing all day.

The luck being they should have been down to 10 men within 2 minutes. Obviously this is counting on the fact we would have capitalised.

not really. not at the start of the season with a brand new back 5/midfield and no striker. imo

It's not an impressive record, but it's ok given the context. We're solid, we know what we need to do to improve and if we do that we'll be more than OK.

I said the same thing in another thread, minus the drugs bit - not that it didn't have an impact

Ian Royal I think said March 2014... Which seems fair.

It takes a couple of minutes max to check on Soccerbase or the results archive here.

I wonder whether our defence and midfield solidity will take a hit when we get our attack sorted by bringing in a couple more genuine attackers and losing a couple of the solid central midfielders. Hopefully not a big one.

You'd expect so, but let's cross that bridge if and when we get to it.

Years ago I watched Spurs play non league Altringcham at home in the FA Cup. They scored first. Spurs scrapped at equaliser in the 85th minute to force a replay. At the end of the days it's 11 vs 11. If guys cannot turn up for the big occasions then they never will. Last years FA Cup run being a timely reminder as well.

Really enjoyed the game tbh, fantastic support from those who travelled along with decent home support.
Met a few friendly Pompey fans before the game and wished them well for the season ahead as they have been through a fair bit so deserve some future success.

Any hints on why the club is approaching the FL regarding things reported by Nick Blackman.

Surely as it was reported to the ref at the time he will report it as a matter of course.
