Lacoste he was impressing me off the field even though the results on the field have been poor since his arrival.

Have you been to watch many games this season?

I live abroad so have only seen 2. I don't really need to see every game to notice that results since his arrival have been poor.

Anyway, this isn't the point of my post. Performances have been much improved this season.

Have you been to watch many games this season?

Would that affect the results?

All hail the Thais! :D

And now the pressure really is on Clarke to deliver, as he has probably been given the best backing ever experienced by a Reading manager in a summer transfer window.

Lacoste Well, give Clarke his dues he delivered on his promise. We have signed two new strikers, two central midfield players, three wide midfield/attackers a fullback, centre back and two goal keepers. He and the Thais have delivered on their promise.

Clarke went about his business professionally and methodically and whilst I still don't think he's necessarily the right man for the job, he was impressing me off the field even though the results on the field have been poor since his arrival.

This was until today.

Today he has spent a relative fortune on a player that we will only see for one season. Believe it or not, I'm overjoyed that we have signed Vydra however the manner in which he has come in leaves a hugely sour taste in my mouth.

Many of you are correct, if he fires us to promotion then what the hell, the money is small fry but for that to happen we need to be one of the best three teams in this division. Can anyone here really see that happening?

Many of you also say that this is just modern football and that we'd be whinging if we didn't get a new striker and that the club can't win. This is all valid however surely a clever manager wouldn't have spent the whole summer chasing a player, who in all reality, was going to sign for a far bigger Club than us.

Sure, we have signed a great forward at this level but he isn't ours, this isn't building and unless a miracle happens this isn't a step forward

I would have much preferred us to have done some proper management and scouting and found one or maybe even two players from somewhere for the same cost even if it was from the lower leagues that would take time to adapt, someone we can call ours and start building a great team full of heart, spirit and a team we can call our own, not a team full of loan signings who frankly, probably won't give a fcuk.

That moves me on to this character John. Wtf is this all about. Another heartless loan and you've all seen what the Lisbon fans think of him. It all sounds too familiar. Is this guy seriously going to have the bottle and the spirit to battle it out with the championships hardened pros on a cold winters evening when the chips are down? maybe, maybe not. I highly doubt it though. At least it's only a loan and we can send him back.

We have 6 loan players now, 6. This isn't RFC and this isn't a club evolving, this is poor foresight by Clarke and maybe, just maybe a lack of scouting ability. We will never get to know this team because they'll all be gone at the end of the season. Build slowly and cleverly, that's how we've always had success.

Like I say, apart from Al-habsi, John and Vydra I'm really happy with the way Clarke has gone about this summer however today just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

He has put his nuts on the block, I just hope it works out for him.

Before today 9/10

After today 6/10

Although I feel our squad now is far stronger than it was as we ended last season, we were not in a position where we only needed a few final pieces to the jigsaw to be equipped to go up - we needed a squad overhaul and I fear that we'll just spend this season improving without going up, but at great cost, without being able to hold onto players like John and Vydra for the future.

It feels a bit like we've walked up to a roulette table and stuck it all on red.

How is my post in any way trolling?

Am I not allowed to post my views on this, a very different transfer window?

I know you post prem fans urge, desire and dream of signings 24/7. I was just being quite honest about how I feel our summer has been.

If ypu read my post, I'm happy with our signings, just not the way we went about all of them.

Oh and Winch, fully agree.

Can't be bothered to read the whole thing - but I wanted to pick out one point which I feel will be rearing it's head quite a bit over the next few days - the number of loans.

There's nowt wrong with bringing players in on loan with the option to purchase at the end of the season. It allows us to not only benefit from the player's qualities for the whole season, but to also get a good look at them before committing to long term contracts that have, quite frankly, royally buggered the club in the last few years.

This is a far more frugal, sensible way to go about things then spending large amounts on transfer fees, as well as committing the club to long term deals that they may not be able to afford for players we can't be sure will fit in.

Each of the players brought in appear to add something that we were missing - each of the players bring in qualities that we as a fanbase were crying out for just a few weeks ago, and the Thais have absolutely destroyed any suggestion that they are unwilling to invest.

Another important point to remember with all this is that unlike the Zingarevich spending, which was pretty much run by the crook Samuelson and Obelensky, Howe and Hammond have been very much involved throughout this and have ensured that any money we are spending lies within our means as a football club.

You're right. We should have signed nobody and stick it all on Black(man)

We have brought in -(Just first teamers in this list)

Orlando Sa
Paolo Hurtado
Jonathan Bond
Ali Al-Habsi
Alex Fernandez
Paul McShane
Stephen Quinn
Andrew Taylor
Lucas Piazon
Matej Vydra
Ola John

Anyone saying our business this summer has been bad (including the Vydra deal) is clueless. Don't care what anyone says, we are now stronger in EVERY position except probably goalkeepers but we now have strength in depth in every position.

This is a squad that is easily capable of finishing in the top 6 at least and I'm guna stick my neck out and say we will be promoted this season.
