Quite clearly Wayne Rooney is a striker and has scored the most goals for England so I'm saying he's the best striker as the facts back that up.

I've not said Charlton was a striker or the best striker. In fact, I'm not even sure where Charlton has come from in this deb8 as I hadn't mentioned him at all until this erupted.....

You need to tell the original poster of this thread off - because he included Charlton in the list of this thread entitled 'Englands Best Striker'.

No Fixed Abode It's subjective so the only way you can judge it is by stats

Yes but as i said, Rooney has played 107 games to get his 50 goals whereas Lineker played 80 to score 48 and Shearer 30 in 63....Greeves got 44 in 57

So really i wouldn't say who has scored the most is the best striker - in fact that shows Rooney isn't as good as he took more games to beat their individual record.

?

It's like arguing who the best Premier League team is since it's inauguration. Some might says it's Arsenal as they play the most attractive football, but all the stats say Manchester United.

OK - a silly analogy really but a clear one to make you douches realise. Perhaps ALL of you need to go in the HOF.

I'd look at the debate in a slightly different way.

If I had to choose a striker to play in a team I'm picking now (assuming each of them was at his best) who would I choose ?

Probably Shearer ... then Lineker ... then Rooney (even I'm not old enough to remember Greaves or the others at their best)
With that sort of choice I'd also be taking into account the likelihood of Rooney getting into referee trouble.

Well if that's your argument it's David Nugent. He scored 1 goal in 1 game.

But you were using the argument of goals per game.

I would rate Lineker alongside Greaves. Both penalty area poachers - I cannot readily remember either of them scoring from outside the box. Greaves was first-choice for Ramsey in 66 and if it was not for his injury and Hurst's introduction (as a different type of forward), would we have won it all? Hurst's work rate was remarkable and there is no way Greaves would have made that lung-bursting run at the end of extra time for the fourth.

I posted it up before lunch buddy, thankfully I could still remember the numbers and so didn't take any time. Glad I could help though.

It's Shearer for me, but I agree it grates that he retired so early. Having seen much more of him than any of the earlier players probably helps him. Linekar in second and I can't really comment on anyone before him other than purely stats based. Owen was plagued by injuries but otherwise would have been up there.

Rooney's got a great record, but he's never done remotely enough at a tournament to really nail down the top spot. If he has a good Euros and scores 3 or 4 at those Finals, then he's probably done enough at that point to prove he's the best. But if he fails again and gets one or fewer goals he's just proving yet again he can't deliver on the big stage for England, and in that case I don't think he can really be considered for top position, no matter how many goals he scores.
