Isn't the longest gap Reading have had without a manager the period between sacking Q&G in early May 1997 and appointing TB in late June 1998?

Mid season record would be the 3 weeks it took to decide Q&G had the job in January 1994.

Note, with Steve Coppell the club knew who they wanted and it was known he would be manager but agreed we had to wait 3 weeks for him to complete a busy period of games with Brighton.

Lacoste I think this could all rumble on for a week or so yet.

Sooner the better I say but would rather they got it right.

A friend of mine close to the club says there hasn't been much in the way of progress and it's doubtful we will have anyone in place before Preston. Apparently none of the candidates mentioned so far are nailed on or remotely close, so McD rumour is most likely just a result of betting patterns.

I reckon the new man will be someone no one really predicted, and will leave everyone completely deflated and disappointed.

We went 13 months without a manager :o .

13 months without a manager > 12 months with Steve Clarke.

6 weeks mid season between Portferfield getting the boot and McGhee being appointed.

Seeing as Dave's under 13, I'll guess that SF might be ahead in the supporting stakes

Ideally Pearson but it doesn't look likely now.

Someone British who knows how to get out of this league but would have bee happy with a punt on Dolan.

If this is true (and there is nothing to suggest it isn't given where we currently are) then those suggesting that this was all planned are probably wrong and that the qpr defeat was a kneejerk reaction. We may well have had Pearson as our first choice, but clearly that wasn't a done deal before Clarkes sacking and so the decision to sack Clarke wasn't based on someone ready to accept, waiting in the wings.

I wonder (and this is total speculation) if Brian has been approached but on a short term, steady the ship type of deal, perhaps to the end of the season. If he has been approached then you would have thought he'd make a decision quickly if it was a decent length of contract. The fact that his price isn't drifting suggests it might be in limbo but that he has been approached in some way. ....

From Charles

Reading are clearly not rushing into making this appointment.

Having spoken again to people at the club today, an announcement on who will replace Steve Clarke does not appear to be imminent.

I’ve been told that can all change very quickly - one phone call could suddenly kick everything gear - but as it stands the search goes on.

There doesn’t seem to be any concern at the speed at which the hunt is progressing. In fact people seem quite calm at the Mad Stad.

After having three managers in as many years, Reading know this is an appointment they must get right - particularly with the riches which could be on offer in the Premier League next season.

So they are taking their time and trying to ensure they land the best man for the job.

hate cliche'd phrases like that. They could easily get it wrong, then get the one after that right. They could get the next 5 wrong and then get it right.

Hopefully means we aren't as interested in BM as the bookies would have us believe. If he was their man, it'd be done and dusted pretty sharpish I imagine.

I'm taking the postitives from that and moving on!

Who, of course, has proved himself to be a fantastic manager over time.

Seriously, the guy isn't great and will fail in his next job too.
