After hearing Martin Kuhl's interview yesterday I wouldn't actually be that disappointed if he was given a crack at it.

Obviously tomorrow will be more of an indication what he's like on the pitch (err, sort of) but he doesn't seem to take any b*llocks and is down to earth. Knows the players and appointing from within isn't always a bad idea.

But hey ho, I would prefer Neil Lennon

Martin Kuhl: Reading caretaker manager to lead side at Preston

Reading caretaker manager Martin Kuhl has confirmed he will take charge of the first team for their Championship match against Preston on Saturday.

Under-21s manager Kuhl was placed in charge on an interim basis following Steve Clarke's dismissal on Friday.

"I've been informed I'm taking charge of the team on Saturday," he told BBC Radio Berkshire.

Former manager Brian McDermott is understood to have held talks about a potential return to the club.

Kuhl, 50, a former Birmingham, Sheffield United and Portsmouth midfielder, has been with the club since 2011.

"I'm on about my 74th page of (picking) a team at the moment," he said, ahead of the visit to Deepdale.

"It's the business end. There's people travelling and paying money supporting the club and the players' have got to realise that.
"We move on and the supporters stay here."

Kuhl led Reading's under-21s to victory in the Premier League Cup in 2014 when they beat Manchester City in the final.

A former assistant manager to Gary Waddock at Wycombe, he also had a brief caretaker spell in charge of Aldershot in 2007.

As 'foreign' means of or from a country other than ones own, people from Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland are indeed foreign to people from England.

No, that's not right. The UK is a country made up of three former countries - England, Scotland and Wales - and Northern Ireland, a province created by the Government of Ireland Act 1920. We might refer to E,S and W as 'countries' because that is a convenient phrase to use in the absence of anything better, but NI has never been a separate country. People from S,W and NI are not foreign. They just talk funny.

Doesn't seem to be a consensus on this. For arguments sake England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland can be regarded as countries in their own right, but then the UK can also be regarded as a country. So I guess a Scotsman would be foreign to England but not foreign to the UK.

Do people not think that McDermott possibly only played 'hoof ball' before, because he thought that was the most effective way to get the best out of the squad he had?

I seem to recall us playing some decent stuff in the second half of 09/10, playing on the ground through the likes of Gylfi and Brian Howard, who were more suited to that type of play. We also had good overlapping full backs, particularly Bertrand, who got up and down better than Harte could after him.

He might try a different approach with the players we now have (if he's appointed, of course) and play it on the ground more.

Regardless of playing styles, however, we need to have clinical finishers otherwise all the build up doesn't really matter.

Good post. I loved the second half of the 09-10 season. 6-0 v Peterborough, 5-0 v Sheffield Wednesday, 3-0 v Coventry. I'd like to se him try to create that sort of playing style if possible which was a lot more entertaining than any of the slow possession build-up we have tried.
